[xj-s] radio removal

does anyone have any tips on removing the radio from my 1992
xjs, this is the one with a cd player and a 6 disc changer
in the trunk (boot). I can find no reference to removing the
radio in either of my repair manuals. My radio just went
dead in the middle of a tune, could it be that it didnt like
the song I was playing? the fuses check out ok, so I am
guessing that the radio just up and quit. I notice that the
power antenae doesnt go up either . anyone have any thoughts
or suggestions as to what it could be before I have to
spring for a new radio? as always thanks and have a great
jag day… Terry Spoor–

so Terry, what on earth were you playing at the time?

it’s been awhile (did that on a '93 once; will be doing my
'95 soon), but I’ll give it a try: pull both the A/C temp
and fan speed knobs straight off; unerneath you’ll find
‘‘screw rings’’ which hold the cover panel in place; undo them
using a small screwdriver; remove panel carefully (can’t
recall if the facelift also has the fibre optics); the radio
is probably screwed to the mounting bracket with 4 phillips
screws.
If you need another one let me know; mine’s useless in
Europe (different bandwith scale); happy to let it go.

good luck–

Pull out the two A/C knobs on either side of the radio.

That will expose a brass ring with a notch cut into it.
You’ll need some needlenose pliers to unscrew those two brass
rings to get the A/C faceplate off.

Once off, you’ll see four philips head screws at each corner.
Once off, your radio should slide out rather easily.–

Also a deep socket works well for the two nuts that are under the
A/C switches. The radio has a ground strap, plug for the CD player
in the trunk, and the white multi-plug that is a B***H to undue if
you have a very short harness like my 94! Also the Alpine unit is
no longer made and the USA shop does not have much in the way of
parts. I found a shop in FLA that got mine working but it cost!

I did this recently on my 89 XJS. I pulled off the plastic
switch dials for the AC/Heat and Fan, used a screw driver to
loosen and remove the round slotted nuts behind the dials, and
gently moved the faceplate forward, but did not detach it from
the fiber optic lines. Bringing the radio forward, detach the
two plugs. My speaker wires were labeled with an original
yellow tape indicating which were front left/right positive
and negative and rear left/right pos. & neg. Hope this helps.–
