[xj-s] Resonators, mufflers

It appears that I need to be saving $$ for my '88 XJS resonators,
mufflers. But local shops don’t seem to have ready access to the
parts. Where are folks finding success and fair prices for such
things?

Thanks in advance.

Brandon ,

There is a list of Jag parts sources at my Web site. Can’t
really say who has the best prices, but a few phone calls
should answer your questions.

BTW, it’s good to have you on the list… some of us may contact
you professionally from time to time, maintenance on these cars
being what it is

Hi Brandon:

For most all parts (rather than supplies such as fluids) ordering online or via phone from one of the suppliers such as Coventry West (Atlanta, GA), Motorcars, Ltd. (Houston, TX), or Welsh Enterprises (Steubenville, OH), is usually the best bet for getting the right thing at the right price, without running all over.

For muffler parts, since most everyone gets them from one of the major manufacturers such as Walker or Bosal, price would appear to be the prime consideration. Autopartswarehouse.com
has the rear silencers (round cross-section) for $85.33 each (Walker# 22491). The Walker Web page has part numbers for all its products, searched by Make & Model, with diagrams of the exhaust system for that vehicle.

You might consider modifying the original system as some have done. See the Book, and the archives for various modifications which have removed one set of silencers, the cats, etc.

I would humbly submit that if you are considering upgrading your
'88’s exhaust system, you will find no finer system anywhere, at any
price, than the AJ6 TT Extractor Complete. The improvement in
horsepower, low-end torque and exhaust note resonance this system
made when applied to my '86 V-12 was nothing short of astonishing.

Hi Doc
As an ex muffler shop operator this issue really comes down to what
you want to spend. You have many options such as oem jaguar, after
market replacement (walker/bosal/IPL etc) and specialty
(Dynomax/Borla/Spintech etc) There quiet a few aftermarket
resonators that will fill in adequately over the factory jag piece
at considerably less money but there may be a sound variation over
OEM. Any competant muffler shop can fab a replacement piece for you
or order an OEM unit for you. Welcome to the list.–

Tell you what I did on my old XJ6 when the replacement redonators
lasted about a year. I went to my favorite muffler shop (custom)
and had him install some good ‘‘glass packs’’. He had to weld some
hangers on them so that they would hang from the Jag. They are
good ones and bullet proof. The sound was great but not loud. We
should be able to hear our exhaust tone, it is just natural. I
think he charged me about $150. Beat that deal.

Beware, find a good shop. If you don’t know one ask around some
repair shops, go and visit. Trust me.

Do you happen to remember what brand of glasspack? I know NOTHING
sounded better than good glasspacks on my old '57 Chevy Belair
convert with a balance pipe. Back then they were Smittys.–

Tom
The only thing you want to watch in chossing a glasspack is the
fact that they use fibreglass packing as sound absorption material.
This material eventually fails long before the actual housing and
the sound of your exhaust will change considerably eventually
requiring replacement again (unless of course you like the ‘‘new’’
sound). Not knocking Michael’s exhaust, I’m just trying to add some
info for an informed decision. A chambered muffler will have the
same shaped/tone of a glasspack but you won’t have to worry about
material failure. I believe summit and jegs have them.–
