[xj-s] Tips before I tackle Rear Brakes?

Hopefully soon I’ll have an opportunity to get to working on
my rear brakes (outboard on my '94). Only problem is I’ve
never worked on brakes. I have:

  1. EBC OEM+ replacement rotors
  2. Akebono Pads
  3. Brake cleaner
  4. Brake fluid

Is there a good run through on how to do it somewhere? Any
pitfalls I should be wary of? Anything that any idiot should
know that I probably don’t?

Also, I know I’ll need to look at my parking brakes some
time. Anything I should check as long as the rotors are off?
To be honest, I’m a little nervous about pulling off the
calipers.

I know to open the bleeders before I move the pistons back
and I’ve familiarized myself with the bleed procedure.–

Changing rear pads isn’t difficult. Spray the bleers with rust
penetrant and give it a chance to work. If you can’t break the
blleders loose don’t force them because you’ll break 'em off and
then your screwed. If you need new calipers you can generally get
them at a NAPA store. I’ve gotten front calipers at NAPA in Land
O’Lakes, FL and this store carries the rears as well. The anti-
rattle clips can be a b**ch to get back on but they always go after
a fight. Get some proper disc brake lube and carefully clean and
lubricate the caliper slides.
Take a look at your rotors for wear. Not difficult to replace - the
small screws that hold them on can be broken loose with an impact
tool. Cut the safety wire (if still present) to remove the the
screws holding the caliper brackets. A lot of fellows replace the
safety wire with either lock washers or Lock Tite. I prefer the
safety wire.
A proper brake job is time consuming and not difficult. Cleanliness
is key–

Thanks for the response. One question: what is caliper lube?–

FWIW I’ve had great results over the years using high-temp synthetic wheel
bearing grease.
