[xj-s] Transmission Filter Change

I was going to change the filter on my 95 XJS 4.0L the other day
but I could not break loose the dip stick tube at the transmission
cover. I put a lot of pressure on the fitting, but it wouldn’t
budge. Aside from useing a bigger wrench, does anyone know a good
way of doing this ? Heating the fitting perhaps ? Is this common to
be so tight ? Suggestions?–

Funny,I had exactly the same whith my 92 xjs 4.0. I was afraid to
strip the bolt, and ended up whith dismantling the sump and filler
neck still attached to each other. Was quite easy, just remove the
bracket of the filler tube from the manifold and jack the car up as
far as possible. When lowering the whole assy. turn it slightly
under the car ,and you saved yourself a lot of potential
trouble. When the sump deformes or rips youre cooked.Atf burns quite
well…By the way,I reused the old atf from my jag as fuel for my
diesel car.Just a sligt sift, poored it in my tank and it brought me
120 km driving…–

If your ZF 4 HP24 is like the HP22 on my VDP, with the filler tube attached to the front of the pan, there should be a smaller hex head on the pan which you can hold (to prevent damage to the pan) while light impact is applied to the nut, such as by tapping a breaker bar with a hammer. Impact will usually break loose a stuck fitting better than a dead pull.

If all else fails, remove the pan with the filler attached as another post suggested. I hope whoever over-torqued the filler nut didn’t do the same to the T-27 (Torx) bolts holding the filter.
