[xj-s] Trouble Starting the 4.0 AJ16

I had some recent issues with the engine. Occasionally I would
start the car cold, it would turn over and stall out. The second
attempt would always restart the car without a problem. I don’t
know if that has any bearing on the following propblem that
occurred this morning.

I hadn’t driven the car for 3-4 days, which is unusual, but I could
not get the car started. It would crank with a whirring noise, but
not catch. Occasionally I would feel it want to catch a little bit.

I ended up shifting into Neutral and tried it again, without any
change.

Then I tapped the gas, and it seemed like I was getting a little
more effort so I started tapping the gas pedal rapidly and it
started to catch more until it finally turned over.

I drove it down to my shop, just to make sure it would turn over
again, and sure enough it did. Went to a two hour meeting, and it
fired up no probelems.

What could be the cause of this problem?

I have changed the fuel filter only a few months back. Could it be
the pump going bad?–

Hi Veekay;

When I have not driventhe car for a few days, I turn the key 2 to
three times without actually turning the car on so that fuel
pressure will build up–

Almost sounds like flooding, is that possible with fuel injection?

Only possible if the cold start valve is dumping too much
fuel or injectors are leaking…–

Well, if the two issues are indeed related, I have had
incidents where I restart the car (after a 20+ mile drive
and only a few minutes of being off) and it turns over but
immediately dies. The second restart always worked though,
so I never thought much of it.

I’m going to replace my fuel regulator. I hate to throw
parts at this thing, but I don’t believe it’s the pump, and
I don’t believe its an electrical problem, because of the
fact that pumping the gas pedal seemed to have gotten the
engine to turn over. It seems that something is beginning
to fail.

I replaced the EGR Valve not long ago, and it was pretty
filthy. I’m wondering if the engine is running lean? I am
getting 18.5 mpg typically, and that’s in traffic/highway.
I think I got it to 22mpg when I took it on a long,
exclusively highway drive. That would lead me to believe
that it’s not dumping/starving fuel at the engine…–
