[xj-s] "Vaselining" the Wheels?

Hi All,

Well, I’m excited to announce that I have purchased and am
driving Supercat’s replacement, a '94 Kingfisher Blue
Metallic/Doeskin beauty with only 70K original miles on her
(I have named her ‘‘Superblue’’) after her unfortunate
totaling accident last month. I will post more about that
later on, but right now I have a quick question about the
lattice-style wheels she came with

I noticed that in the ‘‘wheel care’’ section of the
maintenance guide of the owner’s manual set that came with
Superblue that it recommends rubbing the lattice wheels down
with Vaseline (well, ‘‘petroleum jelly’’ in U.K.-speak) after
they have been washed well. Anyone actually do this, and
what is the purpose of this ‘‘lube job’’?–
