[xj-s] what the heck is that doing there?

my 84 xjs has been running a bit hot (since it’s like 100 degrees the past
two weeks!), so i decided to do what many have suggested. i pulled the top
cover plate off the radiator to clean between the condensor and the
radiator. in order to remove that plate you had to unhook what appears to
be a thin coolant crossover connector whatever piping and two wires that
went to a IGNITION COIL mounted in front of the air conditioning condensor
and radiator. BIZZARE! the center, large spark plug outlet of it is
plugged! what the heck is that doing there??? yes, there is a regular coil
all hooked up right in front of the distributor cap. thanks, larry stein,

At the time of design Jaguar apparently couldn’t get their hands on a single
coil that would keep all 12 rompin’ stompin’ cylinders firing at higher rpm
so they just added a second coil.

If either ever fails there is now a newer coil available that’ll take the
place of both oldies. I made such a change but (and this is just silly) kept
the aux coil up front as a conversation piece

The coil you discovered is coupled to the primary coil
mounted up by the throttle pedestal. It IS A FACTORY
INSTALLATION! The reason for it’s existence is to
provide the voltage necessary to run the engine above
4000 RPM. The single coil would simply not get the
job done. If you aren’t convinced, simply unplug one
side of the secondary coil up behind the coil and see
how well it DOESN’T run!

In later years, the coil used on the '93 XJR-S was
substituted for the two coil setup used in your car.

Hope this helps.
