Everything will fit except the center warning light cluster, Mark.
The cut-out is different. You’d have to figure out a way around
that. And I’m not sure if Aussie spec cars had a catylist light.
The ser2 dash won’t have a hole for that. You could use a set of
ser2 warning lights but they are different from the ser3 so some
rewiring would be needed. I haven’t tried it, but you might be
able to simply fit a ser2 lense onto the ser3 cluster which would
cover the cut-out but the legends wouldn’t match up with the actual
warnings.–

I have a set of kent alloys that the clearcoat is lifting due to salt
damage and I want to strip them and repaint them. Does anyone have any
experience with using paint stripper on them? Good idea or should I send
them out for blasting?

I’d blast 'em & chrome 'em, Craig – a great opportunity to match the
rest of the car’s chrome, see?..

I fitted a lovely brand new SIII dash to my previous SII.
All was spot on except the central lights aperture that was
slightly larger at the top and bottom.

So the other way round you will have a problem fitting your
centre cluster. You will have to increase the width of the
aperture in the dash. Sounds like a very easy diy job.–

I have chrome Kents and they tend to flake,…the chrome comes off
the wheel. Had a slow leak from ( as it turned out ) chrome flaking
off of the wheel where the tire bead seals at the wheel rim. I have
a set of 5 ‘‘like new’’ stock Kent wheels. I am going to have the
anodizing removed and then polish the hell out of the base
aluminum. As an owner of a 73 MGB, I frequently visit the MGB
Experience website, and recently there has been much interest in
removing the aluminum anodizing that is on MGB windscreen frames
and polishing the frame until it appears as chrome. I have tried
doing this on a spare MGB windscreen frame I have, and after going
to a smoother and smoother grade of sandpaper ( now at 2000 )the
frame is just like chrome, very shiney. So, with that in mind, I
would suggest in polishing the rims until you reach a mirror shine
as opposed to chrome plating them. Aluminum can be polished to a
very nice mirror finish. Start with 600 paper and work your way to
2000 then rubbing compound applied by machine then wax. May not be
quite as shiney as chrome plating but it will be close and best of
all will not flake.–

Well, as in many things, it depends. Aluminum only survives in air
because its surface atoms oxidize instantly to form the ingredient of
many sandpapers – aluminum oxide. It’s very hard, but very thin and
the underlying aluminum alloy is soft. So, if you go the polish way, be
prepared to clearcoat it, or never take it out on the road where it may
get hit by gravel, wetted with salty water, etc. That’s why the pitting
occurs, even in the chromed version, if the chroming is poorly done.
Since US dealers had the wheels chromed, who know how good each set is?
In our case, pitting was modest and concealable…

http://www.jag-lovers.org/snaps/snap_view.php3?id=1189390448

A few years later and it’s still fine, but we have no salt on roads here.

So, personally, I’d take the wheels to a good plating shop that knows
how to properly layer different, compatible metals between the alloy &
the chrome. Chromium is far harder than aluminum and so is indeed best
for the outside world, just as on bumpers.–

For those who want to repaint their Jaguar alloy wheels: the exact colour is
provided by Autoglym Silver Wheel paint. This is a very high quality, high
solid paint that provides a perfect finish. Highly recommended. Ah! And for
all thos satin black underhood pieces, the Autoglym Satin Black - again, it
is an exact match in colour and finish.

I won’t be chroming these wheels because I’ll be using them on my
Daimler Limousine. The wheels for the late limos were the kent alloys,
but with a 10.5" diameter chrome hubcap that covers most of the wheel.
It would be too much to have everything chromed, and I want to stay
original, so I will be using the Autoglym paint.

In reply to a message from Neatherd sent Sat 11 Oct 2008:

One of the powder coat colors I have seen that looks quite good is
called Near Chrome. However I still feel that a good coat of wax on
polished alunimum is a good way to go. The guy who changes my
wheels/tires tells me that most of the chrome wheels he has seen
flake eventually. Once the chrome plating takes a hard hit and the
plating has been nicked, it starts to lift, and nothing can be done
about it, except grind off the offending sections like Alex did.
Personally I feel that you are still left with an edge around the
inner rim where the chrome meets the aluminum and it will
eventually continue to lift. Mine are far from perfect,( small
pits that will grow larger over time and causing a need to replace
the wheels as they start to look ratty ) that’s why I have snagged
a complete set of pristine (never been on a car) stock Kents for
future use. Most likely polished aluminum. If I run into problems,
then powder coating with the Near Chrome color will be an option.
That said, I have always found that the appearance of the stock
silver painted wheels on an XJ6 leave a lot to be desired. Kinda
plain. Just my opinion. On the other hand, the excellent styling of
the car makes it difficult to find a completely different
replacement wheel style that will not detract from the lines of the
car. Purely subjective,…wire wheels always look nice on this
model ,…you just need really strong ones as the car is heavy.
Having the wheels chromed properly is not cheap. Buying / mounting
new tires, new center caps, balancing the wheel/tire etc. and you
have spent the better part of $2000 USD–
