[xj] side fender decal

I ordered a replacement side fender decal from ebay. When it
arrived, it was just the metal decal with two prongs that don’t
line up with the holes in the car. It seems like they didn’t send
me the rubber piece that goes underneath the decal to attach it to
the car.

Just wondering if you guys had any suggestions. I think the
junkyard takes these off their cars before putting them on the lot,
so I can’t get one there. Could I make something? Order just the
rubber from somewhere? I’d like to attach this decal to complete
the body.–

Do you mean a badge rather than a decal?

If a badge, I have three ideas:

  1. Cut your own rubber.

  2. Some badges are attached with a glue. I’ve a tube in my goop
    drawer.

  3. Two sided tape.

Your car is mine’s twin, sorta!!

One (Can we have your name? we are friendly here!):

As Carl has written, there are solutions, but it should be noted that the
rubber pad under the badge (the “decal” is the growler appliqu on the metal
piece) was eliminated on the very last Series III cars (1992) and the badges
were attached by 3M tape. Your 1983 car did have the rubber piece. The fact
that holes don’t line up just indicates that the badge provided is from a
different era than your car.
You can cut the metal prongs off the badge and attach it by 3M tape or by
silicone adhesive. OR you can contact David Boger (of our list - see? we
know each other by name; his site is “Everyday Jaguar”) - he will no doubt
be able to supply both badge and rubber pad.

You should be able to attach it with or without the rubber
gasket.

The correct badges are BEC9656 and BEC9657 for the series
3. The pins on the badge go through the rubber backing
piece and into plastic grommets (BD26989) inserted into
the holes in the fender.

The holes should line up. If not, you may have a badge
for a series 2 (BD35865 and BD35866) which is bigger and
wont fit your 83.

As described in Jagcare III, the badges are handed. The
jaguar should always be running forward regardless of
which side he is mounted.–

I have two on my SII and I would be happy to remove themfor
someone, car is being sold as it is rusting away.

I just took a good one off a 1972 S1 that I saved for some
insane reason, would send to you for postage…

I see no reason to retain them and have the holes filled in
for the planned repainting…less is better.–

Thanks everyone for the responses! I made my own rubber gasket out
of an old floor mat and glued everything on. It looks pretty good
and seems to be holding–

Thanks for your help, sorry I forgot to sign out last time,
