[xj] The Year of the Cat 3B

Part 3: Recovery Road (Lord Give Me Strength)

Continuing:

  1. Oil pressure gauge intermittent.
I still have this problem. I believe it to be caused by the sender unit.

  2. Water leaks at lower corners of windshield, and lower right corner
    of back glass.
I had a dickens of a time locating these leaks. I could not duplicate
the conditions using a water hose. For some reason, the leaks would
only occur after a long slow rain, so I only suspected where they were
coming from having only seen the result (wet carpets) and not the actual
leak. One rainy day I happened to be looking toward the windshield as I
shut the passenger door from the outside and thought I saw some movement
in the water pooled along the lower edge of the windshield. I tried it
again, looking more closely, and sure enough - bubbles. I located all
three leaks this way, and on a dry day used some “flowable” silicone at
the lower corners of the front and back glass. I am not very pleased
with the job (a little messy), but at least the carpets have not been
    wet since that time.

  3. Front wheels wildly out of alignment.
I had the wheels aligned at a Jaguar Dealer by a gentleman who obviously
knew what he was doing. One tie rod end replaced in the process. Now
it holds the road straight and steady.

  4. Right front window switch will lower the window, but won’t always
    raise the window.
    JIM replaced switch.

  5. Left front and right rear speakers do not work.
Left front speaker still does not work - intermittent wiring problem.
The right rear speaker was merely disconnected.

  6. One set of keys with car, none of which fits the boot.
I obtained some proper Jaguar key blanks and had a new set of keys made.
Boot lock still does not work well.

  7. Cassette player hangs up.
I still have this problem. My wife can get it to work by lifting a
corner of the cassette with a nail file.

  8. Cowbells.
I removed the metal panel in the boot, underneath the parcel shelf, and
discovered the original cloth paddings lying in the drain channels. I
laundered these bits of cloth, pressed them out to dry, and glued them
back on the vent door flaps. How’s that for keeping the car original!
(If only I hadn’t used those Harley shock absorbers for the AFM).

  9. Right turn signal indicator not working.
The bulb socket had just slipped out of it’s hole in the speedometer. I
removed the speedometer and just pushed the socket back into place.

  10. Right front marker light not working.

  11. Cigar lighter not working.
I still have both these problems. The fuses appear to be ok. Haven’t
put any concentrated effort into these yet.

  12. Air flow meter shock mounts broken.
I replaced these with Harley Davidson shock mounts. The proper Harley
number is on the parts exchange list.

  13. Left sun visor keeper broken.
I replaced it with a new one from the Jaguar Dealer. Inexpensive.

  14. Power steering pump leaking.
JIM replaced seal. It still leaks.

  15. Power steering rack leaking.
JIM replaced with a rebuilt rack. The new one is not leaking.

  16. Headlights out of alignment.
I have tweaked the headlight pointing some, but don’t think I have them
quite right yet. I plan to get the seven inch headlights and then I
will take the time to do the job right.

Due to the length of this posting, I am segmenting it. Next will be 3C
starting with the “Ugly” items repair status.

Billy: for the steering leak get some SLICK 50 Steering sealer. I normally
would not recommend a “mechanic in a can” but this actually works, and is
colourless so the fluid remains red. Fuses: visual checking of the fuses is
worse than useles since it may convince you that the fuse is OK when it is
not. Replace the fuses. Outside marker light: there is a ground connection
at the back of the unit, accessible from the inner fender side. It is a
bullet connector that slides into a ring. Often this gets corroded or loaded
with mud. This can be the source of the light failure. Or the bulb may
simply be not making contact. A tap on the unit may produce light if this is
the case.----- Original Message -----

Also Billy, on the front sidelights – they rust inside, where the bayonet
bulb tips make contact, so open them up and use a Dremel-like tool with a wire
brush to clean off the rust, then use electrical grease (I use olive oil) on
the whole inside surface before putting the bulb back in. If you want a photo
of how I fixed the fender-well grounding, etc. permanently, I could mail it.
