[xj] trip computer

I used a
pal nut on the internal piece (folded over spring steel with
threads formed in it) to allow a screw to replace the rivet.

I think this would be a mistake since the purpose of the rivet is not
mechanical attachment of the power regulator, but thermal: There must be
good, intimate metal-metal contact between the regulator’s tab and the
metal casing. A ‘pal nut’ if I understand that correctly would insert a
very non-flat piece of spring steel in the thermal path and mess up the
cooling. Robert, as we have discussed, I’m sure your unit’s problem of
regualrly requiring resetting was because the regulator’s tab was not
thermally connected. I’m fairly sure this regulator has an internal
high-temp shutdown feature which protects it, but of course has an
unpredictable effect (though not damaging) on the computer’s operation.

Chris,
I believe you are right about the pal nut. At least that is my
understanding also which would limit its thermal conductivity. I am
experimenting with this as it can’t do any harm. I have a bullet
rivet yet it seems a little loose when inserted. I am tryin
a ‘‘rube goldberg’’ (ever hear of him?) to make it snug. I will see
if it works!

Hi Darren
It looks like Doug has put you on the track to get an owner’s handbook.
But basically, at the start of a trip…I do it each time I fill up…press
RESET button for five seconds to zero everything.
“The TIME function will commence(to display press TIME pause press TIME
again) and will record time elapsed since reset with ignition on.
During the journey the fuel usage and the distance travelled will be
monitered. The display buttons may be pressed to show average speed of
journey(AV.SPD.),average fuel consumption (AVE.) since start of
journey/reset and the fuel used on the journey (FUEL).”
To see how your driving affects your fuel consumption press INST. button
which will give you the fuel consumption at the moment in litres pre 100k or
miles per gallon(U.S.)…
As an average('86 V12) I’d often be going down the road at about 70 mph and
showing 22 or 23 mpg…and in Canada,showing 10,11 or 12 litres per 100
at 100 k …
When I fueled up, it would take just as many gal. or Litres as it said I’d
used over the distance. For a trip, you can put average fuel against average
speed and compare .
It seems accurate…except in Oregon where you are not allowed to put in
your own gas…and it’s not always worth trickling the gas in to get it
full…but it does add interest and it’s helpful on something like
the Alcan if you have to decide whether or not you should grab a little
fuel…and the average speed helps to see how yer doing!
Hope this helps, but get a Handbook if you can; lots of interesting stuff.

Someone on this list has a lot of knowledge on the internal
workings of the trip computer, can’t remember who. My
backlight for the function buttons, not the button lights
themself has died. I’m sure I could yank the computer, find
the appropriate bulb/led and re-solder a new one in.

Does anyone know anything about the wattage on the bulb/led
and where one might find one? I would assume its 12V, but I
should confirm this also. I know its trivial, but since
I’ve had plenty of practice at soldering, and I’m trying to
fix all of the little annoying problems that only cost a
buck or two, I’d like to tackle this hopefully quick job.

I did find a source for just about any type of bulb you can
imagine.

Hi,

I had the same problem. Just took out the computer, unscrewed the
rear nuts to dissassemble it. I don’t know where one would find a
direct replacement bulb. I wound up using a Green LED with a 270
ohm resisitor to replace the burned out back light. The backlight
shines into a plastic bar, which provides the light across the
display. The LED works great. BTW, I took some Mother’s brand
plastic polish and polished up the display - wow, didn’t realize
how dirty it was.

Hope this helps,

Aww Heck, Jim! It’s blizzarding out (so much for global

and get the handbook…but here it is on the table by the door.
Here’s what I’ve got for a S3 ‘86…hope it helps; you’ll have
three answers from the group by the time I get this done !!:
‘‘Before starting a journey press RESET btton for 5 seconds to zero
functions.
The time function will commence (to display press TIME pause press
TIME again) and will record elapsed time since reset with the
ignition on.’’
‘’…fuel usage and distance travelled will be monitered. The display
buttons may be pressed to show average speed of journey(AV/SPD )
average fuel consumption(AVE)since start of journey/reset and the
fuel used on the journey (FUEL)
INST will give you fuel you are using at that moment in either mpg
or litres/100k depending on where you selected the little button at
the top.
When you shut off the car and then resume the trip, it will still
have the info unless you press reset for 5 seconds again’’.(I do it
whenever I fill up on a trip).

‘‘Press RESET and TIME together to set hour and RESET and DISP
together to set minutes…it does not change when you hold reset
for 5 seconds.’’
I think that’s everything !

I’ve made a note of the date and time so the next poor soul will
get help from me right at the beginning!

Aside from the physical issues of fitting the thing in where there’s
no hole for it, is there any reason why I shouldn’t be able to fit a
standard type Jaguar trip computer module into my 1982 XJ12?

I don’t think the loom has connections for it but presumably I just

Has anyone already done this? Upgraded a trip-computer-less saloon?

Apologies in advance if this has been covered somewhere in the

Personally, I’m thinking of going the other way – hate cars that have no
clocks you can read without going inside the house to get the key! The trip
computer is amusing, but rarely legible in real daylight and has a kind of
“Robby the Robot” look from an old TV SciFi show (to me, of course). So, I
have a spare, SII clock that maye well find it’s next life in our SIII.

Hi Justin,

Same dilemma here.

I also have an '82 V12 without, and I really hate the SII centre console in
it, so I’m upgrading it to the wood console with trip computer.

I’m fortunate in that I have an '83 V12 VdP breaker, but the schematics for
it are in the ROM.
You’ll need to splice some wires in, but the most important is a small unit
that you’ll need, which is mounted next to the ECU in the boot on the
TC-equipped cars. I don’t know if this box is the same for the 6 and 12
cylinder models, but you’re in the UK so you shouldn’t have a problem
sourcing it. It ties in with some wires from the ECU, and you’ll need to
take the output to the console. Otherwise, all the wires you need to splice
into are in the console, 6 if I remember correctly.

Cheers!
