[xj] What is

1978 XJ6

The shiney metal piece that is visble when you open the boot
located in the channel under the rear window? It seems to be
in the middle of the channel - whayever it is, it is loose
and rattling like crazt when I shut the doors.

Stupid question of the day I know!!!–

HI Wayne…

Do an archive search for ‘‘cow bells’’… think that will clear it up
for you…

No problem Wayne…

Sorry for the short answer, I was running like crazy yesterday…

Basically what you are hearing is some flaps banging against metal
in there. Originally they had a buffering strip on them, but in
time they fall off, and then you get metal to metal contact.

The job to fix it isn’t that bad, probably take an hour and a half
or so…
Just drop that pan down, and you’ll see the problem immediately.
Just put something on the bottom of those flaps to buffer the
sound, and you’ll be good to go…

While you are in there, have a look at that pan. Over time those
start to rust pretty badly, especially next to the drains. While
the pan is down, it’s a good time to repair yours or find another
one, if it’s beyond repair…
