[xj] Wiper Relay location Series II

Hello to All.

I would appreciate any insight !

I am trying to locate the Wiper Relay on my 79 XJ12 Series II. On
the wiring Diagram the number is #251.

My wipers just stopped functioning. The motor works,
when I run it directly on both high and low postions.
This makes me believe the relay may be the problem.

I have power at the switch in the follow wires:
White w lite green, brown w lite green, lite green.

I also have power at the motor in the following wires:

Top Plug In / Ignotion ON Wiper Switch OFF - Pink, Lite Green.
Socket 1-D.

TopPlug In / Ignotion ON Wiper Switch on HIGH postiion - white,
lite green. Socket 3.

Lower Plug In / Ignotion ON Wiper Switch OFF - lite green Socket 4.

I have checked the fuse box, and fuses are okay.

I have also removed the wires from the wiper switch, and jumped
them together with the power sourse to the switch, but had no
results.

I can find info in the posts on series III, but not on series II.

Any help or insight on how to correct this madness would be greatly
appreciated.

Evertime an electrical problem comes up my British wife reminds me,
that all things worth having are complex …

Can’t live without wipers in Florida in the summer time (rainy
season).

Charles,
I am going to assume that your SII XJ12 is the same as my SII XJ6 in this
area.
The Repair Operations Manual (ROM) lists the following for Windshield Wiper
Motor Relay Remove and refit:

  1. Disconnect Battery
  2. Drop Passenger seat side dash casing per 76.46.11
    76.46.11: Drivers Under Scuttle Casing
    1. Unscrew locking ring securing speedometer trip to underscuttle
    casing.
    2. Rmove two screws securing casing and quarter panel to fascia
    support
    bracket.
    3. Lower top of casing sufficient to allow access to rheostat.
    4. Noting position detach leads from rheostat.
    5. Withdraw under scuttle casing and quarter panel from car.
  3. Release relay securing spring clip.
  4. Pull relay unit from base connector block.

Notice that step 2 refers to Passenger Seat and 76.46.11 referrs to Drivers
side - fortunately the diagram shows a sketch of a RHD passengers side area -
the left side. 76.46.11 shows the drivers side for a LHD car. I have not gone
looking for this on my own SII
so I’m not positive which side it’s on but it appears to be close to the
outer lower corner of the dashboard above the footwell. The relay appears to be a
12 pin rectangular shaped relay and has a spring wire clip over the top to
retain it. P/N is listed as C38952.

In reply to a message from CharlesA sent Sat 28 Aug 2004:

Scott,

Thank you for the reply, and all the information.
Very Good of you to take the time.

I was in the middle of working on taking the switch wires from the
switch, and my old dog decided he was going to jump in the car.
Do you have any information on the correct wires (color code)
connections to the numbers on the conductor on the wiper switch.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
