[xj40] 1991 XJ6 radio illumination question

Are the memory buttons on the radio supposed to continuously
show a red tell tail when a certain station is selected?
Are the memory buttons and the up and down ‘‘paddle’’ switch
on the right side for the CD control supposed to have
illumination? My car has been upgraded from the stock 1990
radio to the one used from 1991 on that controls the trunk
mounted CD player. My illumination is only on for the large
on/off knob and the smaller base & treble knobs on the left
side of the unit so the radio illumination relay is working
and can be heard to click when turning on the side lights.–

Hi John. I’ve just been out on the driveway to test mine,
it’s a 93 so should be the same.

My station buttons 1 - 6 are illuminated and the red light
remains on as each button is pressed, both in cd and radio mode
The on/off switch is illuminated and also the Radio/ CD
switch and the words FM AM. The bass and treble words are
lit too. The radio tuning knob on the right is not lit up -
so I may have a problem - but the light from the display
illuminates this knob well enough to see in the dark anyway
so I’m not sure.
The paddle switch is not illuminated either but again the
white markings on it seem to be illuminous from the display
lamp and I don’t think it would need to be back lit.
hope this helps you.
cheers.–

Thanks, Casso. On mine none of the memory buttons are back
lit or have the red triangle lit. There is however faint
back lighting for the large on/off volume knob and the base
and treble lighting but that appears to come on with the
radio and not controlled by the dimmer switch. So I am
thinking there must be an internal bulb in the radio that is
out but wonder if each memory button has its own separate
lighting source and the same or separate (?) source for the
AM/FM/Tape/CD button. Maybe it is done internally with fiber
optics? Well there are really bigger problems in life that
radio illumination. Thanks for checking your car for me.–

Sounds to me like its the source for the internal lighting
rather than a bulb. I think it would be difficult to make
the red light swap from 1 to 6 using one bulb, it’s most
likely a mini circuit board. I’ve found sometimes just
unplugging and cleaning a few connections can be the answer
to problems like that although I appreciate access is not
that good.

I have a similar problem with the window switches in the
drivers door. sometimes they all illuminate, sometimes just
one half, and other times none will light at all. If I
lightly thump the door panel most times at least two or
three will light up. I’ve had the panel off a few times now
and I’m at a loss to find a loose connection anywhere.

But you are right, at least that’s all we have to worry
about, for the time being anyway.
good luck.–

I’m back to diagnosing my 1993 Jaguar radio fitted to my 1990 car to make use of the CD player function. All works fine except the “locate illumination” on the radio face plate. I have determined that the radio illumination relay is working and there is power to the car’s harness plug with a yellow and blue wire which, per the electrical diagram is the power to the radio illuminate function, as least is was on the 1990 radio. My newer 1993 radio has two mystery wires coming from the back of the radio, a orange with blue tracer and a red with green tracer. These are currently not connected to anything in the car. Can anyone with a good wiring diagram for the 1993 model year determine what the purpose of these two wires is? I am suspecting one may be for the illumination but am hesitant to just connect it to the vehicle’s yellow and blue wire without knowing.

The 1993 Jaguar radios did not rely on any illumination circuits for the backlit function of the presets or tape door, or the tell tale red lights. These all operate whenever the radio is turned on. The backlighting of the volume/power and bass/treble knobs come on when the key is on. If you have the battery and accessory wires connected, your radio backlights should work as designed. If the tell tale red bulbs, the preset buttons and the tape door backlights do not work, there is a bad connection in the logic circuit inside the radio. The can be fixed by carefully reflowing the solder on the end of one of the surface mount resistors. I figured this out on the bench with mine. It something like resistor 145 on the right back part of the board.

Thank you for this information. A check tonight indicates all the illumination that is intended to work is working with the exception of the red triangles on the preset buttons and the tape door backlight. At some point I will pull the radio and take it to a radio electronics shop and have them reflow the solder for that circuit. Thanks again.
