[xj40] 88 Brake light quandry

Much thanks to this forum I’m down to just two VCM warnings and I’m
not too worried about either Brake pads low - and I think that is
down to a sort of iffy looking connection for the pad sensor
because I replaced the rear pads and the front pads looked as good
as the replacements I was going to put on and the power stearing
fluid it says is low but, it does seem to be low and it is
functioning and I’ve tried ‘‘bleeding’’ it too. Anyway what I am
really perplexed by is the driver’s side brake light which doesn’t
come on except occasionally when I test the fourways it will come
on with the turn signal - doesn’t do that on the passenger side and
usually doesn’t ever come on… . It’s a Left hand drive car - any
ideas? The connections to the light model at the tail of the car
right next to the light housing seem okay and the connection near
the filler cap for the relay seem okay… .

Just forward of the left rear light cluster behind the
carpet trim on the trunk floor is a power ground stud. Check
that for corrosion, clean up and grease. That may solve the
problem.–

Thanks, I have checked that out. I noticed yestersday that
sometimes (not contantly) a bulb light failure comes on and when I
push the clear button it will say 035001 - does that mean anything
useful? No bulbs are blown though and they are all recently
replaced.
Thanks,

I don’t think that number ‘035001’ which appears on the VCM
screen has any relevance to the bulb failure warning.

Reading an update modification Jaguar produced to overcome a
trip computer problem on early cars, they talk about holding
down the ‘CLEAR’ button whilst cycling the mph / kph switch
between the two to display an ‘instrument pack number’ on
the VCM screen.

Perhaps that is what you are seeing

Try swapping the left side rear BFM over to the right side
and vice-versa to see if the original left side fault
travels over to the right side with that BFM. If so, you
know that the fault is in that BFM.–
