[xj40] " 89 Intermittent digital dash driving me crazy

In reply to a message from builderbuell sent Tue 14 Sep 2010:

Common problem - as you can read if you search the XJ40
archives using ‘digital dash solder’ as the keywords.
Here is a good example of such a post from George B

Here is the link to the XJ40 on-line book on that subject :-

The worst thing you can do is to ‘thump’ the dash to get the
lights back on - that merely introduces further cracks in
poor solder joints. :-)–

I have been fixing one thing or another on my XJ40 for 2
years. I am completely stumped by an intermittent problem
with the instrument cluster. Most of the time upon starting
the instuments light up and actually read true. After awhile
the just go out. I think that would eliminate a loose wire
or connection as nothing is moving or vibrating???

had the same happen in mine.took the cluster out, checked all the
solder joints but could not see any problem.with the cluster out
and holding it under the dash I pluged all the conectors back in
and found if I put slight pressure on one of the boards all would
work great(white backing cover off to do this).have now got a cut
down wine cork holding slight pressure between board and white
backing cover.touch wood (hand on head)last two years been working
great. rob…–
