[xj40] 91 xj6 interior lights

Sorry, I sent this before without a title

Hi Brian,
Thank you for the response
Do the ‘door guard’ lights come on when you open the doors?
No, they don`t

If not, I would suspect the door guard relay (brown base on
component panel under passenger side dash) particularly if
all of the following work OK.
Are we talking UK passenger or US passenger? i.e. left hand side or tother? (I suspect its the right hand side)

When you have the sidelights on, do the glove-box and
under-hood lights illuminate?
Yes they do

With the ignition on, do the rear ‘E’ post lights illuminate?
Sorry, what is that , please?

Do the trunk light and the left & right vanity mirror lights
illuminate?
The vanity mirror lights come on

Tim Bryan should be in bed by now.
The ‘E’ post lights are the reading lights, when fitted above the rear
passengers head, they are activated by pulling out and then they can be
twisted to shine on the ‘Chauffered persons’ reading matter.

Tim,

The electrics under the dash on an XJ40 are in effect
mirror-imaged between a LHD and a RHD model - so in both
cases, ‘passenger side’ is the passenger side.

Robin has explained what the ‘E’ post lights are - they were
not fitted to all models.

Since all of those other lights illuminate, that means that
the common fuse serving those as well as the overhead lights
must be good.

That pretty much leaves the door guard relay as the culprit

  • unless -both_ ‘door ajar’ micro-switches have failed
simultaneously. The door guard relay is a single throw 4-pin
cube relay, so if you remove it and substitute temporarily a
similar relay from another circuit, that should prove if the
    original relay is the culprit.

If swapping relays doesn’t cure the problem, I’m afraid you
may have a problem with the Central Microprocessor (CPU),
again under the passenger side dash behind the glove-box.

There are three connectors on the CPU - a 3-way Black, a
36-way Black and a 36-way Yellow. With the ignition off and
battery negative cable removed, try unplugging those and
cleaning the contacts with electronic cleaner, just in case
it is simply a bad connection (especially if you have ever
had any water leakage under the dash). Pay particular
attention to pins 18 (Purple wire) and 20 (Purple/white
wire) of the 36-way Black connector - they carry the signal
from the door open switches.–

Thank you
I tried switching relays. No joy
I noticed that when I flipped the light switch on the center
console that I could hear(and feel) the relay working
So I suppose that means the next step is the CPU. Is it
easily identifiable…what colour is it, please? Is there a
number or description on it? Do I have to remove the glove
box to get at it?

Tim,

The CPU is under the passenger side dash - about the size of
a couple of cigarette packets mounted vertically behind the
component panel (the one with all of the relays) and you do
not need to remove the glove box to see it.

It will have a part number similar to DBC10234 (but I’m not
sure of the correct part number for your model) and you
can’t miss it because of the three connectors I described
earlier :------------------------------
