[xj40] A/C expansion valve removal

Hello all…

Does anyone know the size of the nut on the bottom a/c evaporator
tube that threads into the expansion valve.

Since there is very little room to put a wrench on it I am going to
purchase a metric crowfoot set and want to be sure it includes the
correct size I need.–

Dennis,

That’s an interesting question and because I no longer have
a car to check those sizes I went to the factory workshop
manual - 82.25.01 (always the last resort!)

I was a little surprised to see the union nuts on the pipes
connecting the evaporator to the expansion valve being
described as 3/4’’ UNC and 7/8’’ UNC.

If that is correct they seem not to be metric fittings and
it would make the respective hexagons to be 1.125’’ across
flats for the 3/4’’ UNC and 1.3125’’ across flats for the 7/8’’
UNC.

That sounds too large for me - but I could be wrong! :-)–

Groove:
Take the battery out when you work on the expansion
valve. The extra room makes the job a whole lot easier.
And, all of the A/C fittings are English dimensions. From
memory, I think the nut sizes are 5/8 inch and 3/4 inch.–

Alrighty then…

Thanks for the input guys !!

Loosening the top nut on the expansion valve was of course very
easy. The bottom, not so much being blocked by the afore mentioned
top nut…

Taking your advice I removed the battery tray but still didn’t have
room to maneuver that big 7/8’’ wrench. OK so then I removed the
plastic vacuum canister (box) under the tray and still no luck.

So off to Harbor Freight where I purchased a crowsfoot set for a
whopping 9 bucks. Unfortunately the biggest wrench in the set was
only 3/4’’. So a little filing and I opened it up to 7/8’’. That
did the trick, but that nut was really tight after 26 years.

The reason for all this is that I lost my charge on the system a
few months back. I decided to just replace everything instead of
tracking down the leak. Everything that is EXCEPT the evaporator
which (fingers crossed) is OK. Now that I have the expansion valve
off I plan to block one of the evaporator tubes and pull a vacuum
using the other one to test it.

After all these years I thought the old girl deserved a fresh A/C
system because here in Texas during the summer months air
conditioning means everything…stay cool my friends!–

I am planning to replace the TXV, too. So, a 7/8” wrench should be used for the lower nut. Is there any other precautions? Haynes manual advices to remove the back pipes first and then the front pipes. The body of the valve should be kept in place by one wrench.
I will renew the O-rings. I will use green O-rings which work with the R134 refrigerant.
