[xj40] Cabin Fumes & Air Cond

Hi from NZ,

Had my '90 Sov for over a year now. Had complaints from backseat
passengers about exhaust fumes in that time. Have noticed it myself
especially with the front window(s) down. Had my Jag mechanic on
the case during routine service and he claimed not to notice it so
bad but extended my tailpipes as he reckons this often helps.

Still fumes in the cabin though. Spoke to Jag dealer who
said, ‘‘Well the car wasn’t designed to be driven with the windows
down.’’ How about that! (Reckons windows down creates a vacuum in
the cabin which sucks in exhaust fumes.)

Just going into winter here so this is not a major, however,
fiancee is hesitant to accompany me in the car as she gets nauseous
and I’m hesitant to take passengers because I always get the
same, ‘‘it’s a little fumey isn’t it.’’

Anything I can look for/do to fix it myself?

BTW…Air cond not working - compressor & condenser have gone
according to mechanics. $1500 NZ say the boys. This can wait until
summer also, but is there any fix for this that doesn’t involve
that kind of money? I heard a guy say he once bolted a Holden unit
into his Jag (series III) for far less than he was quoted by Jaguar
and the unit actually performed better.

Please advise & thankyou.

I doubt your mechanic is correct. I drive mine with the roof open and
back windows cracked a bit with no fumes. Or all windows and roof open.

If you had an exhaust leak under the passenger compartment or at the
manifold and opened only the two front windows, you could create
suction that would make the cabin negative but would not get any fumes
unless you had an exhaust leak. My 4 mufflers and two cats were
replaced last year and I had holes in the rear two mufflers but had no
fumes in the car.

I suspect you have an exhaust leak under the passenger area. If you
were in the states I would recommend a Midas Muffler shop to check it
out. Sounds dangerous to me.

Grandad,

I agree with the last poster, have your exhaust boxes checked.

If they are sound, see if you have any holes in trunk (boot) area
or bad seals. There is indeed a low pressure area at the rear of
the vehicle and gases may enter via that route.

As far as the a/c goes, I believe the compressor is an AC Delco
unit, perhaps someone else here will have details.

Good Luck,

Grandad, check this out you never know. Does you car still have
the ‘duckbill’ attached to the drain tube for the air intake box on
the bulkhead? You know the one covered by the plastic grill at base
of windscreen. Rain is supposed to drain out of the chamber and
the ‘duckbill’ is there to prevent exhaust gases entering the cabin.

Regards

Hi All,

I am a little late to the Jaguar world, having inherited a 1988 Xj40 just over 1 year ago. (330,000 kms on the clock)

Like others have said, everybody who rides in it or stands near it when running has said “It’s a bit fumey isn’t it.”. I took the usual path of taking it to a Jaguar independent which specializes in older Jags. After several investigations and throwing money at the exhaust system, valve seals, fuel injectors, cabin heating, duck bill drains etc I met with the usual response when a repairer really doesn’t know the answer “I think you are just a bit too fussy”

There is truth in that - I am fussy - no question. But too fussy - not.

What was odd about the problem is that the car exhaust never emits smoke. Not when cold, not a puff at startup and not with the throttle wide open. A very clean running engine all up even with the high kms.

To my repairer’s credit they did solve it. They let me come down on a Saturday when their best repairer (20+ plus years an owner of an XJ40) went over the vehicle with me looking on and explaining carefully the nature of the smell over and over again, and voila, good communication lead to good a good result. Out of interest, this investigation session was done after i did a very thorough engine bay cleanup - but from the top only.

Here was what we found.

  1. A coolant leak down the block, very minor.
  2. An oil leak of a similar nature.
  3. A huge un-holy mess on the bottom of the engine - and on all of the bits that get hot.
  4. Evidence that the mess was getting very hot as the engine heated up and emitting a foul smell.
  5. The mess was constantly being re-supplied by the leaks.
  6. The smell was eventually finding its way into the cabin as the a/c, heater etc is in a diabolical condition.

So we replaced some gaskets, stopped the leaks and cleaned up the mess. Still yet to do the heating/ac refurbishment but the difference in the car is striking - the smell is now all but gone. The nature of this smell was very hard to put your finger on which has made the issue very tough to diagnose.

Hope this helps somebody.

Well… a smelly car has something wrong. Expecially a luxury car like a JAG. And no… it’s not intended to drive with closed windows

I have an old Fiat 500… the heating of a Fiat 500 is very simple. A part of the air that cools the cylinders is diverted inside the passenger compartment, as the car is air cooled. Imagine that if a cylinder leaks oil or gases, all of the smell arrives directly inside the car. Fortunately it seldomly does, so bad smell is rare.
I drove my xj with windows down but no smell at all. For the AC system i spent about 500 euro for new compressor, seals and dryer replacement. Now the system works with R132A
