[xj40] Code reading...general and ABS

I’ve read some posts about Teves ABS systems and doing the
jumper on the cannon-plug in the boot. They were concerning
a 92’ VDP, if I remember correctly. Does this apply to the
1988 XJ6? How does one read the codes for the vehicle in
general (temp sensor, TPS, ETC…) and how do you read the
codes for the ABS system. I have a vin ‘‘5’’ '88 XJ6…Thanks–

Hi Jonathan,

The pre-90 models did NOT have a diagnostic socket in the boot by the
the ABS ECU into which you could insert a jumper to get a flash code on
the dash warning light like the 90 & later Teves models with the
electric pump. However there are some tests for your 88 model you can
do to help locate a problem which have been discussed in the Archives.

I would suggest the following initial tests & notations:
(1) turning the key to the run position, noting if the “Anti Lock
Failure” warning appears on the VCM;
(2) then starting the engine and letting it idle for ~ 20 seconds,
noting if the “Anti Lock Failure” warning still appears;
(3) then drive the vehicle for a minute or two at 25 to 30 MPH to see
if the warning still appears.

Post back with your results and someone can suggest a next step.

As far as “Check Engine” codes on your 88 model, if certain signals
provided by sensors to the ECM are out of permissible range, the Check
Engine light comes on, and one or more codes are set. Those codes are
numbered from 1 to 8 on the early models. To read a code on your 88
model (after Check Engine appears on the large VCM [Vechicle Condition
Monitor] screen), do the following:
(1) turn the key to the off position for at least 10 seconds;
(2) turn the key on to the run position but do NOT turn it to the start
position;
(3) a single digit numerical code should appear in the small window
below the large VCM screen

Fault codes are found in the Engine Management Section (page 18.8) of
the Jaguar Service Manual. If you don’t have that source, or the
Maintenance Handbook that originally came with the vehicle, just post
the code back to the list and someone can help you.

Thanks very much. Currently I finally can start the car and
when I close the door the VCM is blank!!! The bad news is
the Anti-lock fails it’s dynamic check at ~5mph…i took
the wheel sensors off and cleaned them (they were covered in
filings and grease) and tested again…still fails…I didn’t
clean the wheel surface that passes by the sensors…I’m not
sure what to clean and how to access…until someone helps
me with that, i’m gonna start checking the wiring with an
ohmmeter…i decided to change the brake accumulator, as i
was getting low brake warning after only 3-4 applications of
the brakes…–

‘‘low brake warning’’? What exactly is the message that’s
displayed?–
