[xj40] Connolly or Leatherique?

I’ve got a problem with the leather seats in one of my cars,
the prior owner really did not give the car a whole lot of care.

It’s in very nice shape, but particularly the passengers
seat bottom needs a bit of healing hands applied. No cracks,
popped stitching or the like but the leather is much less
supple than it should be. With use, damage cannot be far away.

Does anyone have hands on, or preferences between Connolly’s
Hide Care (once called Hide Food) and Leatherique’s Rejuvinator?

Not sure I’d trust any of the modern ‘‘wonder cures’’ but I’m
open to suggestions on that path as well.–

Hi Win

Both are good products, as they both use animal fat replacement as
their basis. Fat liquoring is also done during the tanning process.

One thing to note is that Hide Food uses white spirits (paint
thinner) as the cleaner ingredient, it says so on the lable. If
allowed to stay on the leather for an extended period, this can
dissolve the dye. If used as directed, it’s great.

I mention this because I had a sad case last summer where a fellow
with a RR Shadow came for advise about his interior. The colour
could be rubbed off with a towel, and was gooey. After discussion
it came to light that he was applying HIde Food but not buffing it
off as directed. The white spirits had dissolved the dye. A full re-
dye was called for in this unfortunate case.

Good luck,

Rob–

Rob is being very diplomatic. Nearly everyone who has tried
both favours the Leatherique product, as documented in the
archives. This is particularly true if the leather requires
restoration rather than maintenance only.

Rob, I’m curious as to whether the RR dye dissolved by
mineral spirits was the older lacquer or the more recent
water-based?–

Hi Robert, happy weekend.

That’s a good thought; would the white spirits affect a water-based
dye in the same way as the old lacquer-based type? The answer is I
don’t know, but I’ve got some dead seats with water-based dye to
experiment with. I’m betting white spirts will dissolve the water
based dye, because I know alcohol, acetone and lacquer thinners do.
If I find out by testing, I’ll report.

As Robert is aware, the Environmental Protection Agency made car
manufacturers stop using lacquer-based dye in about 1990, in an
effort to stop pollutants in the air.

The Rolls was lacquer based.

Well, back the garage - I’ve got a no-start XJ8.
