[xj40] front shocks

Gentlemen:

I recently tore out the rear SLS and replaced with conventional. What a
treat to finaly drive a car that doesn’t bounce!!

Now I am wondering, how do I tell if the front shocks/springs are done?
And, if i used BOGE in the rear, should I use BOGE in the front? And, what
else should I replace (assuming the shocks/springs need work) at the same
time…

or…should i just trade in the XJ40 on a Saab900 or Volvo Turbo!! (LOL)
JUST KIDDING>>don’t start up that silly thread again on my part!!!

Darren,
If I were you, just for continuity sake, I would use the Boge in the
front. I have KYB in the rear and the front because I like a stiffer ride.
It is a matter of personal taste. After all the bouncing ANYTHING will
appear better.

While you are changing the fronts, make sure to check the upper and

lower shock bushing at the top of the wheel well and inside the engine
compartment where the top shaft from the shock goes through. I replaced
mine because of they were probably the original and I was getting a “thunk”
when I went over bumps on the driver’s side.

You should also check all of the bushings on the wishbone and everywhere

else. Personally, unless you are having problems you need to track down, a
visual check will suffice. I changed out my simplex bushings because they
looked bad and they were. I have delayed on all the others because the car
handles well with no “problems” (Knock on veneer). Eventually I plan to
replace the ball joints just because I want to know they are OK. Unlike the
wheel bearings which I did nearly immediately because I didn’t like the
looks of them, the ball joints are less susceptible to causing problems that
will become debilitating while traveling.

My 2 worth
