[xj40] Front subframe round mount replacement

My XJ40 has been a little erratic at high speed on the
highway lately. After careful inspection I found that the
front subframe rear round mounts have badly decayed. How
difficult are these to replace i.e. does the entire subframe
have to dropped to replace them? Is a special press required
to remove the old ones/ fit the new ones?

I have previously replaced the upper and lower control arm
bushes, front shocks and springs, so I am fairly familiar
with the front ends of these magnificent cars.

Many thanks Andrew

In reply to a message from Andrew Ziolkowski sent Sat 19 Jan 2008:

Having looked at these mounts they are pressed in which is a pain
to do on the car but not impossible.
Hold engine on a engine bay lift( bonnet gutter to gutter)lower sub
frame enough to gain access, cut through rubber bond to remove
mount centre use hack saw to cut outer cage colapse it and remove
align new mount as the centre hole is off set refer to book, make
up 2 large thick washer to support mount with these one side mount
the other sub frame side and use long bolt through center to pull
new mount into place it will not be easy grease threads and bearing
faces to ensure no seizure occurs, good luck hope you are fit.
