You can post pics but you must send them through the correct
channel. Then you wait a bit, sometimes a while but you
will get the pics on the site.–

X300 with a leaper? not in the UK, spring loaded or otherwise. No
XJ6 or XJS for the home market ever had a leaper fitted from the
factory, I don’t know about te US cars, the last to wear one was
the 420G.
I think the year was 1973 when they were outlawed on new cars
unless spring loaded or set so far back on the bonnet they look
ridiculous.
As far as I’m aware you can’t get an MOT fail for one but the
Police could insist you remove it I suppose, though I’ve not heard
of this happening.
As for an accident with a pedestrian, yes, I would think in this
day and age a firm of ‘‘Ambulance chasers’’ would happily persue a
claim on a no win no fee basis if you had impaled the poor victim
on the cat’s jaws.
As for an insurer not paying up, I think they have to, I once was
told by ny insurer that as they was underwriting the car they were
obliged to pay out.–

Well, don’t forget (and you may not be aware) that Jag did switch
to a spring-loaded (and therefore ‘‘safe’’) leaper with the X-300
models in 1995. I guess you could theoretically put one of these
on an XJ40 if you felt so inclined (aren’t they legal, even there?)

They told me that mascots were not legal from a certain date
(I cant remember when) as they were deemed to be dangerous.
What is more, they said, if you have one and get involved in
an accident your insurers will not pay up (regardless of who
was at fault) and in the event of an injury you will be
taken to the cleaners.

Hmmmm … interesting concept, BB

I don’t know about the ‘‘XJ40’’ thing though … I mean the cats are
badged ‘‘XJ6’’ on the rear … And speaking of badges, as far as the
fenders (‘‘wings’’) if they didn’t require those wing repeater lights
there in the U.K. you could have what we have in their place on our
U.S. models - i.e. the leaper badges - in those spots … &:-D)

Actually, I put it out on here many months ago the idea of trying
to find some way to combine the leaper badges with the repeater
lights, which would basically have a bulb mounted behind the
leaper, causing the whole badge to flash when activated. A few
thoughtful souls said they thought it was a good idea, if the
engineering of such a design could be worked out. The main trick
would be finding a way to hollow-out the badge from the underside,
to be able to fit a tiny bulb in there. This idea might be
substanially more feasible now with the advent of LED ‘‘bulbs’’ …
Hmmmm …–
