[xj40] Indicator double-tick and spurious bulb failure warnings

Hi,

Does anybody have any words of wisdom to dispense on these subjects? What is
the likely cause of an indicator double-tick? And how on earth do I
trouble-shoot the bulb failure warning message when all the bulbs are
absolutely, definitely, beyond a shadow of a doubt working?

Many thanks.

Gordan

Gordan:

Does your model have only one turn indicator bulb per side in the rear? My 89 VDP has two, and if either is out, the blinker will click in double-time (twice as fast) and the bulb failure indicator will appear (absolutely, definitely, beyond a shadow of a doubt

Interesting, thanks for that.
No idea if it has one or two, but I will look it up now that you mentioned it.
My car is an '87, so it may well be the same.

But the bulb failure warning went away this morning, after two days of being
on constantly. :frowning: So it can’t be the bulb, right?

Gordon,

I don’t know where you are located (it always helps to say in a
post) but if in North America, then as George says, you have two
stop / indicator bulbs each side and both need to be good (and with
good grounds) to prevent the BFM warning.

On the other hand, if you are in the UK, (or Europe too, I’m not
sure) your car has only one direction indicator bulb in each rear
light cluster BUT you do have the side repeater lamps in the front
wings which the North American cars do not have.

That being so, a problem with a corroded bulb socket in the side
indicator lamp holder will set off the BFM warning - and that may
become intermittant (as it did on my car and just about drove me
nuts trying to find it!). Problem with that scenario is that it’s
almost impossible to get the old bulb base out due to the corrosion
and you end up paying fifteen quid at your local friendly dealer
for a complete new side indicator lamp assembly.–

Gordan:

Does the turn indicator still click in double-time, or has that cleared as well as the bulb failure indicator?

Corroded bulb sockets or bulbs (or bad ground) may cause a bulb which still has an intact filament to give a failure reading to the BFM and/or fail to light.

Not sure, I’ll check tonight when I get to the car. Thanks for this, I always
thought that bulbs either work or not. Clearly, the computer sees “degrees”
of working.

I’m in UK, so I guess no dual bulbs for me…

[sigh]
I guess I’ll have to check all the bulb sockets. :frowning:

Many thanks for the help with this, guys. Much appreciated.

The manual for the '89 Vanden Plas says that the computer
continuously checks the electrical pull on each light bulb. If it
does not detect the proper amperage, then the ‘‘bulb out’’ warning
will appear, even while the light is operating properly. It goes
on to say that using non-Jaguar light bulbs may cause this warning.–

Hi,
I have 1989 VDP and I’m in Florida. My left tun signal does the
same thing but it is not continous. It will work fine one day and
it will act up the next. When it double clicks and I get a bulb
failure warning, all the bulbs are still working. I thought it may
be a filament failure when it heats up but all the bulbs work. I
checked the sockets and they are clean. It has me stumped.
