[xj40] INDICATOR PROB

In reply to a message from XJ40-MARK sent Fri 17 Jul 2009:

Mark,

The problem with your indicators is not the BFM.

The unit which controls the indicator flash rate is the CPU.
It is so designed that, unlike the old ‘hot wire’ flash
units which flashed the remaining external lamps at double
speed if one bulb was out, when one of the bulbs is out or
that bulbs circuit is high resistance (as in the case of a
corroded bulb socket / ground) the dash indicator repeater
will flash at double speed BUT the external indicator lamps
themselves will continue to flash at the normal speed.

My guess is that one of your external side indicator
repeater lamps in the wing, even if it doesn’t have a blown
bulb does in fact have a high resistance to ground due to
corrosion in the bulb socket. That is exactly what happened
to the indicators on my car and I even had a situation where
the BFM detected that high resistance and flagged up a bulb
fail indication on the dash BUT all of the external
indicator lamps were still working OK although the dash
repeater was flashing at double speed.

Drove me nuts trying to find that one! :-)–
The original message included these comments:

so would it likely be a module problem or water getting in the side
repeater?
or both?
