[xj40] loose steering

In reply to a message from Bryan N sent Sat 3 Nov 2007:

Bryan.

You may have to do some slight fettling on the above dimensions to
get them to fit.
On my mates XJR they could be turned by hand in the gaps easily but
with mine I had to loosen the rack mounting bolts to get the gaps
to open up enough to fit the same thickness washer and even then I
had to fit one side and clamp it up to open the gap the other side
as much as possible. There is a couple of mm difference in the gaps
on our cars, manufacturing tolerances I guess.
The only steering issue I had was that the car tried to follow the
ruts in the motorway left by lorries, other than that steering was
fine. The washers cured the wander.
The racks are designed to move in the mountings anyway. My MOT
tester said the criteria they use is that if the rack moves under
tension the bonding and rubber are ok but if it moves freely the
bonding could be gone or the rubber has gone soft.–

I have a loose steering problem, before putting my car in storage I
noticed my front tires were worn on the inside pretty badly
considering I dont drive it much. about 3000km per year.

my question is can bad alingment be the cause of a loose steering
problem?–

Quick answer, YES, a poor alignment can lead to very poor
steering feel.

I’ve found most alignment shops dial in excessive toe-out
when the adjust our Jaguars ‘‘to spec’’ and have actually
given up with the shops.

Your heavy wear on the insides of the tires is a classic
symptom of toe-out and I’d first look to correct the
alignment before suspecting anything else in the front end.–
