[xj40] Main seal replacement

Hi all!
My '89 needs a new main seal. My Jag specialist says its a straight
forward job. However, I do recall the possibility of over filling
it with engine oil. Could over filling have caused the leaks via
the main seal? Should I try draining some oil out to see if it
solves the leak or should I just replace it anyway (115k miles) Any
advice or tips to be followed would be greatly appreciated.–

If the engine contains too much oil, it could leak out anywhere. I’d drain
and check again, a front or rear main crankshaft seal is a rare failure in
your car.

By new “main seal” he’s presumably suggesting it’s either crankshaft front
or rear seal?

Even at 115K miles you’ll be unluckly if it is. Seriously overfilling could
cause oil to blow past either seal but both of them have a lip which would
reseat against the crank when the excess pressure was off.

I’d drain the oil and refill with the correct quantity, clean the engine
off, run up to operating temperature and park it over a clean sheet of paper
or cardboard to check for source of the leak. If the front seal is leaking,
oil will run down the front of the timing cover. If the rear seal is
leaking, oil will collect in the gearbox bellhousing, eventually dripping
out of the inspection hole in the bottom if there’s sufficient.

Front seal is an easy replacement - radiator out and crankshaft pulley off
to gain access. Rear seal is a whole lot more interesting - gearbox out.

I changed the front seal on my 1989 XJ40 as a precaution when I did the
timing chains at around 100K but it looked OK. Never needed to touch the
rear seal. Gearbox was out twice (once for a transmission front seal and
later for a torque convertor). Crankshaft rear seal looked good as new both
times and the last was at 140K.
