[xj40] No interior or puddle lamps. what controls them?

My 92 rhd car has an annoying problem being worse now its winter
and always dark!
The interior lights do not function at all. Everything except the
under bonnet lamps works fine.
I checked under the centre console and all the earths look good.
The relays ‘‘pink’’ when the doors are opened so that circuit is ok.
The overhead lamps are getting 12volts so the system must be of an
earth switch type.
The interior lights do not function on their console mounted switch
either (map light ok).
What controls the interior lights? Is it an ecu of some kind? Where
is it? Is this likely to be at fault?
I’m really struggling here and its getting me down as the rest of
the car is great!–

In reply to a message from octanejunkie sent Fri 24 Nov 2006:

Check the door guard relay (a.k.a. puddle lamp relay) - the
one in the brown base on the component panel under the
passenger side dash. That has some function in combination
with the central microprocessor (behind that component
panel) to activate the interior lights as well as the puddle
lamps when a door is opened.

You should have battery voltage (always hot) on the
Brown/white wires at pins 86 and 30 of the relay base from
fuse C2 in the RH fuse box. When the relay is energised (by
a door being opened to take it to ground) you should see 12
volts on the Blue/yellow wire at pin 87 of that relay to
illuminate the puddle lamps if it is working.

The map reading light is on a different switching circuit to
the other interior lights - as are the underbonnet, glove
box and boot light.–
