[xj40] Pad and Fail in VCM

Hi

I have looked through the ach’s but I can not really find what I’m
looking for. I have just picked up my first jag XJ40 on a 91 J
Plate.

When I collected it the viscous fan clutch had sheared sending the
fan blades into the rad. I replaced both and that system works
fine now. I only mention this for completeness and possible
connection.

My real problem now is that the brake warning light is always on.
Pressing the VCM brings up PAD and FAIL. I have not had the
opportunity to check the Pads yet, but it’s the Fail that really
bothers me. Can the FAIL light be because of the Pads or is it
something else?

If it is something else how do I diagnose what has failed?

Also, while I’m thinking about it. The fuel gauge does not move.
Is this more likely to be the sender unit or the gauge it self. Is
it right that if you ground the sender unit the gauge will go to
full? If so will that indicate the sender unit failure.

I appreciate all the help you guys can give me.

Regards
Idris–

Idi,I think I m correct in saying that when the pads wear, the
light comes on as you say, & pads/fail Warning when you press VCM,
is to tell you that its the Brake Pads that are Failing/need
replacing! The way to determine the Fuel Gauge Fault, is:
disconnect the Wire that goes onto the Tank sender unit, & with the
Ignition switched on, hold the Wire to earth whilst watching the
Fuel Gauge. If the Gauge goes right over to ‘‘FULL’’, it means that
the Wiring to the Gauge, & the Gauge itself are working OK, & the
Fault lies in the Tank sender Unit, (the most likely culprit) Good
