[xj40] Passive restraints (attack belts)

Yesterday the drivers belt would not retract one time when I
parked the car and opened the door. I fiddled with the belt
and shoe a bit, but with no success, so I unhooked the belt
from the shoe. But then the next time I drove the car (with
belt still detached), the shoe moved to the retracted
position when I parked (eg, up by the steering wheel). I was
trying to snap the belt back onto the shoe when the shoe
simply detached and came completely free of the mechanism,
so I was left holding the shoe in my hand. It has a small
hole in the end that is normally hidden within the concealed
track. Now the fasten seatbelt warning is always on, despite
my snapping the (loose) shoe into the end of the harness.

Am I in deep trouble, or is there a way to put the shoe back
in position in the door frame? My fear is that there’s a pin
that goes in that small hole in the shoe and its end is
supposed to be peened over to prevent the shoe from escaping.

The ‘‘shoe’’ I am talking about is in the upper left corner of
the dotted-line area in this diagram:

If I read the diagram correctly, apparently it’s part of an
entire assembly that has to be purchased as a single unit.–

Wayne,

I suggest you check in with your local Jaguar dealer. The
attack belt system is covered by a lifetime warranty and
should still be covered by Jaguar.

The warranty covers the mechanical half of the system, not
the belt itself. Your issues is with the mechanicals and
should fit the criteria fort coverage.–

My 90 majestic had belt problems that Jaguar did fix for
free. After it came home, I got in, started the car, and
when the belts got into position, I pulled the fuses out.
After that, each time I got in, I simply got into the habit
of manually pulling out and connecting the shoulder belt. It
was then completely out of the way getting in and out. I
instantly loved the car 100% more without the annoying belts
in the way. After a few days, you fasten the belt by habit.
What a joy that car was!–

It took me four or five occurances of almost being strangled by
the automatic belts on our 92 VDP Majestic (just after we bought it)
to realize you can’t open the door and stick your head out to check
something. I hate when that happens.

Thanks, guys. I took the car to the local dealer. Seems
there’s a catch-22: the belt system is under warranty for
life, but they say they haven’t been able to get the parts
lately. They are going to order them and call me if & when.

Meantime, the mechanic reminded me of something I’d
forgotten: there is a pair of replacement shoes (L & R) that
comes with the car and they were still buried in my glove
box. This snaps in place at the locked position (took a
lengthy struggle to get mine locked in place) and does not
move with the retractor, but at least now I can manually
fasten the belt, so it feels a bit safer on the freeway, and
I won’t get arrested for not having the belt fastened :>}–
