[xj40] Problems following a change of battery

Hi all. Hope you can help!!

I recently had my xj40 sttod for a while (3 weeks) when I came to
it again the battery had gone flat and central locking would not
operate. I opened the car by key and put the battery on charge.
About 30 minutes into the charge the alarm began to emit repeat
beeps. I switched the ignition on and it continued. I then tried
locking the vehicle which operated the locks and did stop the
alarm. on opening the vehicle it began again. At this point I
started the car and it ran fine, alarm still sounding. after a
couple of minutes the alarm sound stopped. I later on in the day
changed the battery. However on changing the battery the central
locking does not operate from the key fob. The alarm on/off sound
does not operate. On pressing the key fob the headlights come on
and then go off.

What have I done? and how can I rectify this?

Cheers all

Thanks for the message… Just to confirm, I see from the XJ40
online repair book item 6.9, that I could do with ressetting the
alarm system by disconnecting the battery and the alarm backup,
reconecting the batteries and than pressing each of my key fobs to
transmitt a signal the the alarm ecu. this should sort my
problem. Two questions… Is this right or am I g reading this
wrong? and where can I find the Alarm ECU backup battery??

Cheers guys

Thanks for the replies…

It was suggested that I try this

disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes. Reconnect the
battery (the alarm will go off), get in the car, shut the door, put
the key in the ignition and turn it on but do not start. Press the
lock button on the remote and the alarm should go off and the
remote will be programmed.

unfortunately on pressing the key fob button the alarm did stop but
then continued to sound after approx 5 seconds.

Can anyone point out the where I can find the alarm ecu backup
battery? so that I can disconnect that as well. Thanks for the
replies
