[xj40] Removing Fascia (Dash) 89 XJ40

Hi,

This post is for those Jag Lovers who haven’t found their way to this forum yet, or those
who are taking on this task for the first time. The Haynes manual leaves out some
important tidbits and hopefully I cover them. If there is anything I missed, please add
to the post. Also, there should be a link and pictures of the locations of the fascia
(dash) fasteners.

Components you will need to remove:

Left/Right Scuttle (panels under dash)
Left/Right Fascia end panels (one nut on each and push pins)
Center wood veneer panel (pry out towards the rear)
Center Fascia Vent (pulls straight out)
Center Console Ash Tray
Center Console Wood Veneer Panel (ski slope, two butterfly nuts underside)
Climate Control/Radio Console Assembly (six screws, careful…easy to break)
Instrument cluster (four screws accessible from under)
Glove Box Door (two bolts, lots of spacers, don’t lose them)
Glove Box insert (four screws, slide the light assembly through it’s opening)
Relay panel under glove box cavity (four screws/bolts)

You will need to disconnect:

Vacuum lines to Fascia (two green, one black)
Solar sensor (one connection)
In Car Sensor (visible when the glove box insert is removed)(two connections)
Glove Box light assembly (actually just push it through the opening for the light and
disconnect the two spades for the plunger switch for the light)

Suggest you remove:

Fascia Switch Panel (lights/cruise control panel) much easier to remove dash. When you
take out the dash, do it from the passenger side, that way you’re actually handling the
heaviest part of the dash, make it easy on yourself.

The pictures should provide you with guidance for the actual fasteners for the fascia.
There are a total of nine (9) fasteners: (working left to right)

Two on the left (behind fascia end panels)
One behind Instrument cluster
One bolt left side center console
Two screws inside center vent opening (secures fascia to center console)
One bolt right side center console
Two on the right (behind fascia end panels)

I believe I covered everything. Remember, my vehicle is an 89 XJ40 (XJ6) Base model,
your’s may have slight variations from mine. I may have missed something, but for the
most part, this is pretty complete.

Good luck!!!

P.S. Get yourself an expensive box of quart zip-lock bags and a sharpie to write on the
bags. Place every group of fasteners in a bag and mark what they go to. Makes life much
easier on re-assembly.–
