[xj40] Temp Guage Read Wrong

My temperatire guage redlined on my the other day. I immediately
stopped the car & found the car was not overheated. I replaced the
temperature sensor, but it still reads hot/redlined. Any idea what
will cause this? How to fix it?–

perhaps your thermostat is stuck closed and not allowing coolant to
circulate through the engine and head…the coolant temp at the
radiator would appear to be near normal temp (or below) but the
coolant inside the engine would be hot…if the coolant is not
flowing a stuck thermostat, bad coolant pump or a radiator blockage
would all be the cause…–

That’s a good way to approach diagnosing it - but the symptoms are
not there. When I stick the key in - it redlines immediately.
I’ve replaced the sensor, so I know it’s not that. Maybe the wire
is just grounding out somewhere? Could the CPU be going bad?–

if you are getting an instantaneous redline of the gauge then I
would definetly suspect a short in the wiring or ECU or possibly a
defective gauge…one way to check the wireing would be to
disconnect the sensor connector and temporarily run a wire from the
connector to inside the cabin…then remove the wire connection
from the back of the gauge…use an ohm meter and check the
continuity between the two ends of the wire (the end of the temp
wire and the end of the original wire that connects to the
gauge)…if you do not have any continuity you know the wire is
grounded somewhere…if you do have continuity in the wireing and
you have replaced the temp sender the likely cause of your problem
is a bad gauge…if the wireing does have a ground you could try to
trace the wire down and find the short or you could just run a new
wire from the sensor to the gauge…–
