Hi,
Purr-Elle
The Manual says 30000 miles or 2 years which ever
comes first for an auto-trans. fluid and filter change.
I changed the fluid only because I was told by the
dealer that jaguar no longer recommend a filter change
because of the danger of dirt entering the system when the
fluid pan is removed.

I do a drain/refill of my trans every 2 or 3 oil changes. I
changed the filter once, but since it’s a simple metal
screen and after 100K still clean, not sure I think that’s a
necessary step.

I probably do the partial changes a bit more frequently than
really necessary. Both my XJ-40’s had quite discolored
trans fluid when I purchased them and I got into the habit
of doing the trans every oil change till the fluid cleaned
up. Now, I almost feel like I’m shirking my duties with
skipping an oil change or two between doing the transmissions.–

If you’ve recently acquired your car and are uncertain about the
condition of the filters, change them once now and you’ll likely
never have to change them again. This way you’ll know what you are
starting out with.

Jaguar has made it so easy to partially change the trans fluid that
there really is no excuse not to every 2-3 oil changes as
previously stated. Each time you drain without dropping the pan
and changing the filter, you’ll replace about 1/2 of the fluid.
This keeps the additives present and the fluids fresh.

I have a 93 so I apologize in advance if your 88 does not have the
simple plug to remove in the pan which makes the trans fluid
replenishment easier than changing your oil.–
