[xj40] Vanden Plas Majestic and Daimler

Hello,
I have a few questions.First,I’m considering purchasing a 1990
Vanden Plas Majestic as a second car,I know that they’re not very
common and I’ve heard rumors of there only being a thousand made,
but exactly how many are in existance(world wide and how many are
in the US? Second, how much should I pay for an excelent one whith
low miles? Finally third what in the world is a Daimler? From what I
hear of it, it sounds to me like the Brittish version of a Vanden
Plas.I’m not sure. At first I thought about Daimler-Chrysler. I’m
clueless. Can anybody give me one of the answers to my questions.I’d
really appriciate it.

The VDP Majestic was a US-only special trim model of the VDP, sold
in '89, '90 and '92. Jaguar Cars U.S.A. quotes the following U.S.
sales numbers:

1989 - zero
1990 - 803
1991 - zero
1992 - 263

So, there were a total of 1066 VDP Majestics sold in the U.S. I
don’t know if they were ever sold elsewhere in North America.

I know that there are VDP Majestics out there from the 1989 model
year, with the electronic dash, round headlights, power hydraulic
brake booster and so forth, as I have seen one and Bill Weismann
used to own one. I can only assume that they were sold as 1990 MY
cars and are included in the 1990 total.

A Daimler is a Jaguar VDP in Europe. Or perhaps the other 'way
round.

The Daimler motor company was set up in the last few years of the 19th
century. They original imported Daimler engines from Germany, but shortly
after went their own way and were building whole cars of their own. These
cars were of the highest quality and had only one real competitor for many
years… Rolls Royce.
Daimler cars were till the 1950’s the car of choice of the British royal
family, however the car they built for Princess Elizabeth (now Queen
Elizabeth) prince Phillip suffered gearbox failure on delivery and prince
Philip decided to send it back and order a Royce instead. This marked a down
turn in the Daimler Car Companies fortunes, Jaguar bought them in the late
'50s mainly because the needed more factory space.
At some point some attorney type working for Mercedes Benz wanting to make a
name for himself in the company gained an injunction againtbjaguar
preventing the use of the name in the US. And with the introduction of the
X350 the Daimler name has been killed off (thanks Dearborn) I can’t wait for
the Fiesta based Jaguar Deisel.
I believe the Majestic is the only US XJ40 to carry the daimler fluted
grille and boot plinth.

Stewart,

The fluted grille and plinth were used on US-spec VDPs beginning with
the 1993 model year XJ40 and continuing through the X330/X338

How much you should pay is different than what you are willing to
pay, only you know that, check the blue book or better yet the
black book this will give you a starting point. She who must be
obeyed has a 92 Majestic. It is faster (acceleration) than my 97
xj6. The interior is higher quality and consequently more
comfortable. I have had issues with the seat belts, dimmer logic
board, and self leveling system. I personally prefer round lights
and the classic Jag shape, however there is no doubt that the
majestic is a head turner even if it is ‘‘Boxy’’. They are rare,
around 1000 total sold I believe. Go to the Daimler website for a
good history of that company.–

I only know of a handful on line here who have the Majestic. By all
means buy it, especially if it is in good shape and low miles. Let me
know who the owner is if you are not interested and the owner will
accept the Kelly Blue Book value.

No one knows how many are left as they are rarely registered as
Majestics. Probably due to the VIN as they were only listed as VDP and
the local forms do not have places for 1990 XJ6 VDP Majestic in the two
states I have registered in.

No one really knows definitively how many were made (not even Jaguar)
because the factory and local registry’s list the car as a VDP not a
Majestic. The best estimate is that their were ~500 made in 1990 and
~280 made in 1992. These are the only two years they made this model.
The 1990’s are red with metallic paint. the 1992’s were cherry black
(ie black paint with red metallic flakes). I have seen two 1992’s one
in the flesh in 1994 and on on Ebay last year. Have have not seen
another 90 in the flesh but know of less than a dozen still running and
I assume most are on this list but there is no way to tell.

Check Dave Logensgard’s, mine and Scotlander’s pictures on the site for
what a reasonable to good exterior looks like.

Dave
I know of one 89 Majestic in RI that was sold by Jake Kaplan Cars with
the 89 digital dash.
The owner was on the list.
No car resale book lists the 89 as offering a Majestic. You can go to
Kelly Blue Book and see that.
Yet despite that fact the owner swore he had an 89 Majestic with a
digital dash. I would never say for sure have many Majestic’s were made
but have to agree with you on the 89 which would appear to have been a
vary rare model since it is not listed.

I have contacted dealers and Jaguar and Jaguar does not know for sure
how may Majestic’s were sold since they did not keep track of them
separately from other VDP’s.

I have had numbers from 250 to 800 quoted for the 90’s and personally
feel (no proof as this impossible) that the actual number was ~550 for
90 and ~280 for the 92. I would venture a guess that 70% were sold in
the Boston to Washington corridor and 20% in CA with 10% misc areas. I
have no proof but base these numbers on personal observations and the
negative answers obtained when trying to pin down the actual number.

My guess is that they will turn up on the list in increasing numbers as
the people who buy a 15 year old Jaguar (my car is a 90 MY but has a
build date of October 1989 which has caused me to wonder if this was not
the reason you quote 89 as MY for the Majestic (except for the fact that
I know of the one true 89 MY car with the digital dash

I purchased my wife’s Vanden Plas from a Houston wholesaler - he
had three Majestics in his inventory at that time - two (2) 90’s

IIRC, and it has been a while, the wholesale price difference

a couple of hundred bucks or so. Probably less now because they
are, after all, fourteen to fifteen year old cars …

They are indeed rare, and that said, there are quite a few in California. I
have seen at least three different 90s and two different 92s in the Long
Beach area, which is not the most upscale area in So Cal. Thats a pretty
good population. There are also at least 2 XJ12s in the same area.

I personally prefer the 1990 to the 1992, I just am not a fan of the 92
wheel style. Either way, its no different mechanically from a XJ6 so its not
a worry maintenance wise, if its in good shape, by all means go for it, but
dont expect it to be worth any money anytime the next 20 years.

The 90 VDP Majestic had a list price of ~$57,000 n+ dealer add ons,
prep, gas guzzler tax etc. so it sold before sales tax and registration
for ~$60,000. If I recall correctly this was significantly more than
the VDP of the same year. When I bought mine in 1996 it had a bank loan
value of $19,500 and is has the dealer added chrome wheel arches,
protective side trim and a few other items. If I recall the base 90 VDP
at the same time had a loan value of between $10K and $12K.

Like any used car, the Majestic will be worth what someone is willing to
pay for it. As the ones noted on the lot but not showing up on the
list will probably be trashed (assuming they are bought by
unknowledgeable people because they do no care enough to get on the Jag
Lovers list and maintain them (hard to maintain a car with so low a
current value when it cost as much to repair as a ne $70K XJ6). They
will likely trash the car when they find the first problem that cost a
lot of money to fix.

AS I said I am sure that I have not noted more than a handful on the
list since joining many years ago. Had I not joined the list I would
probably have trashed it years ago.

Now that this is past, would anyone car to venture the resale value of
an XJ13 (or how many know the production quantity, BHP and engine type
and size of an XJ13? I know and am not asking for my own knowledge as
much as making a point on resale value as well as knowledge of XJ models.

Cheers

92 year, when they stopped making the model.

The fluted grille and plinth were used on US-spec VDPs beginning with
the 1993 model year XJ40 and continuing through the X330/X338

I believe the Majestic is the only US XJ40 to carry the daimler fluted
grille and boot plinth.

OR IT WAS A GRAY MARKET CAR (IE SOMEONE BOUGHT IT IN THE UK AND SHIPPED IT
BACK WHEN THEY CAM HOME.

OR SOMEONE COULD HAVE JUST BOUGHT THE MATS AS YOU SAY. IT HAS BEEN SAID THE
FLUTED GRILLE WAS OFFERED ON OTHER CARS IN THE LINE AFTER 90 MAJESTIC BUT
WHEN CHECKING CARCOM THEY HAVE PHOTOS OF THE ORIGNAL YEAR AND THE SALES
PRICE AND ALTHOUGH I DID NOT LOOK AT EVERY SINGLE MODEL OR YEAR IN THE XJ40
SERIES THE ONES I DID SEE WERE PLAIN.

Just to add to the confusion, my 92 VDP also has the fluted grill
and boot plinth, but it also has Daimler floor mats although the
original car was a Florida delivery. My guess is that someone
replaced the floor mats at some time?

A UK car would stand out a mile off in the US… the passenger would be
driving it!. However it would be possiblefor it to have been supplied with
the Daimler mats, were there any VDP badged mats?, actually I can’t say I
have actually seen Daimler badged ones on this side of the Atlantic either!
seen plenty with the original mats in though
