[xj40] Water in foot well problem

I have checked the archives on this issue and have had some very
useful pointers as to what might be causing water to fill into the
passenger footwell - annoying thing is that having checked the A/C
drains, the duckbill, the sidepost weep holes (by passenger side
fuse housing) and the grills by the wiper motor I still haven’t
solved the problem! I have pulled all the carpets aside and the
foam padding and have poured water (not much!) over the windscreen
and everything seems to drain away ok without any spill into the
interior of the car - yet every time it rains I get water in the
passenger footwell, and even into the drivers side. I have it
covered with a tarp now, and have done this for some time - so
problem is contained - for now! Does anyone have any pointers of
what I might have missed please? One thing that I haven’t checked
is the ‘plenum drain’ - this was mentioned a few times and I really
want to have a look at it - I am just not clear on where it is -
can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Any advice much appreciated as ever.

Krish,

The ‘plenum’ is the chamber in front of the windshield and
the ‘plenum drain’ is our old faithfull the infamous ‘duckbill’.

Although you may have exercised the outlet to the duckbill to clear
any debris from it, have you removed the air intake grille from the
top of the plenum to check how much debris is trapped under there?
It could be that water entering throgh that intake is not even
getting to the duckbill drain.

Alternatively, do you see any rusting around / under the rubber
seal around the windshield? A rust-through problem there is not
unusual and could leak water behind the dash.–

Whilst you have checked/cleared the duckbill this will not have
removed any water that has leaked into blower units (usually right
Side). If any water is here it will need to be drained as well
although this usually shows more when you go round corners.

I have and would recommend removing the duckbill altogether, I have
had no more water leaks since I did, and no visiting rodents or
bouncing acorns :-)–

Hi Krish:

Do you have a sunroof? If so, try removing the carpet on the passenger side and running water over the sunroof seal. If you get water leaking in the area of the fusebox (bad place for water leak) then one of the drain tubes (there is one in each A-pillar) has come loose from the plenum, from which the water is supposed to go forward and drain behind the front wheel.

If you do have a sunroof, and the test described above yields water in the footwell, then post back & I’ll describe how to get to the tube (it’s NOT easy).

If you don’t have a sunroof, or its drains are NOT the leak source, then as others have suggested, it’s got to be either air plenum (duckbill), A/C condensate drains (but that wouldn’t be “rain-related”), or windshield seal. Need to run a lot of water with carpets removed to find the problem.

one place that I have suspected might be responsible for water
leaks in the front interior, that I have never seen mentioned
before on the Jag BBs, are the sideview mirror bases …

I mentioned a couple years or so back how I one time went through
the automatic carwash and, after the car was soaked in soap, I
turned the a.c. blowers on, only to be greeted with the very
strange sight of seeing bubbles being ‘‘blown’’ from the base of my
sideview mirrors, ala Lawrence Welk. !

After a bit of thinking, I realized the air going into the doors
via the door plenums was blowing, in part, out of the doors through
the mounting holes of the sideview mirrors. Not sure why the
breach of seal, but if air can get out that way it only makes sense
water could get in the door from the opposite direction.

From the door, it seems the water could get into the front
footwell areas somehow.–

Good Day,
I believe my sunroof drains are plugged or have come apart. Do you
know how to check. When it rains, the water does not drain out and
it leaks through the headliner.
Tks

Hi Ted:

There are four drain tubes in the sunroof frame, one at each of the four corners. The drains most likely to be plugged are the front drains.

I would suggest using a piece of nylon trimmer line to probe the drains. Do NOT use anything stiff, such as coat hanger to probe UP from the outlet side of the front drains, as this may dislodge the drain tube from the plenum and create a leak near the #1 or #2 fuse boxes beneath the A pilars.

As a test of the drain, with the sunroof open, pour a small amount of water in the drain perimeter. Water should come out of the rubber drain hoses in the fender well panel behind each front wheel, and behind the rear wheel wells, just in front of the rear silencers. The sunroof seal is not intended to prevent all water from getting into the sunroof drain channel, so those drains must be open.

If you’re getting sunroof drain water dripping down from above the fuse boxes, post back & I’ll describe how to address that problem.
