[xj40] Wet floor

What I at first thought was a leaking sunroof drain I now beleive
is a plenum leak. I removed the wet carpet and the floor sound
padding. The sound padding was soaked so on further investigation
the upper sound padding on the firewall is also soaked as near as I
can tell by lifting the bottom edge reveals vast wetness. I removed
the two rubber nuts/retainers at the bottom and water flooded my
hand when I raised the bottom edge. There is also water far back
along the transmission hump in the sound padding. I tried to remove
the sound padding but it seems to be being held at the top
somewhere and also under the gas pedal stop and steering column
plastic circle where it goes through the firewall. I want to remove
the sound padding to dry and also so I can see where the water is
coming in. How do I remove the pedal stop and the steering column
plastic circle? Also, what might be holding the padding at the top?–

Hi,
When I had a similar problem I took all the easy to
remove floor carpets out and the rubber underlay and put
them through an old mangle before leaving them on the
washing line.
I folded the tunnel carpet up as far as I could and held it
there with clothes pegs before using an old bath towel to
blot up as much water as possible. I left it like this for a
few days while still using the car. It was all totally dry
in about three days. More importantly it led to me finding
out just how the water was entering, and finding and
repairing what could have turned really nasty if left.
If you search past posts on this issue you will find most,
if not all the causes of wet carpets, some as trivial as a
blocked drain, but others that require removing the front
wings. I hope yours is a simple blockage, good luck.
