[xj40] When does ABS Pump Relay Actuate?

Ever since I got my car back on the road, I’ve been trying
to get the ABS system straightened out. I’ve had
continuous ABS warnings from the moment the key is turned
on. Additionally, I haven’t been able to hear any noise
coming from the ABS pump / module. I’ve changed several
ABS wheel sensors and switched out the over voltage relay
with the same result. I also just changed out the ABS
pump with a NOS unit and rebuilt my calipers. Now when I
go to bleed the rear brakes, I can’t get any fluid out.

From my understanding, if the key is on and the brake
pedal is pushed, the fluid should start to flow out on its
own. That’s not happening for me.

I thought maybe my problem is the relay mounted to the ABS
pump housing (JLM1314). I took the cover off the relay and
its not activating no matter what I do. Does anyone know
when or how this relay should actuate? It is extremely
clean on the inside and doesn’t seem stuck, so I don’t
want to buy a replacement if I’ll just be wasting my
money. Any suggestions from the experts here?–

Brett,

The operation of the ABS pump relay is controlled by the ABS
ECU in the trunk. You are correct that with the ignition on,
when you depress the brake pedal the relay should energise
to operate the pump. The ABS ECU does that by putting the
Red/yellow wire from the relay to ground at pin 28 on the
35-way black connector at the ABS ECU.

The battery voltage supply to the pump via the relay is not
fused so you should get 12 volts, always hot, on the Brown
wire to pin 12 of the 12-way black connector at the ABS
modulator. If that voltage is present (irrespective of the
condition of any other part of the ABS system) and you
ground the Red/yellow wire the relay should energise.–
