[xk] Bad voltage regulator or contacts?

Gary,
Just a suggestion. You might want to clean the contacts in the voltage
regulator with a burnishing tool or very fine emery cloth. Be sure to clean both
sides of the contacts.

I had some NOS Lucas distributor points that were “brand new” 20 years ago,
and looked perfect, but when I replaced the worn points with the new ones,
the car wouldn’t start. My ohmmeter showed no circuit to gnd with the points
closed. The emery cloth removed the invisible coating and the car started
with no problem.
You should also remove the band around the generator and make sure the
brushes still have some travel left and are not being held from making good
contact against the armature by the brush connecting wires.

Tested the wire to the field connection and it is fine, so that’s
not the problem.

Possibly, your field wire (the wire which runs from the small
field terminal on the back of the generator to the voltage
regulator) is bad, or is not making electrical contact.

Cleaned the contacts as you suggested, no change. Look at the
suggestions Mike has made and the results of the tests posted. So
far not a diagnosos but it seems that my NOS VR must be as bad as
my original???
