[xk-engine] S3 Starter Motor

My S3 engine block has come back from the reconditioners with a
higher compression ratio than I expected. I was aiming for 9.2:1
but apparently this is not the first skim of the surfaces so I am
left with 9.56:1. Apart from having to pay for more expensive
petrol I am concerned about whether the starter motor will be up to
the task. Any comments from those in the know?
If a more powerful starter would be a good idea can anyone suggest
something that will fit? I know the V12 starter will not fit.
I am not worried about the ignition side of things because I will
eventually fit an aftermarket system.
TIA

Taking you numbers at face value, I’d expect a starter in good condition would cope fine. The small geear reduction starters have more cranking torque if you’re concerned about that.

As for compression ratio, there are special thicker head gaskets available to restore CR to normal. Not sure who sells them where you are but they are not ultra scarce.

I wouldn’t worry about the starter. Just try her out! If it’s not as
perky as you like…

a) Improve the cabling path from batt to starter by cleaning all
connections & soldering the crimped cable & ground lugs, and clean up
the solenoid contact & commutator…

b) If not enough joy from a), get a gear-reduction starter, as from XKs
Unlimited…

At the current fuel cost, what does it matter if she doesn’t ping!?–

Gear reduction starters are made by Gustafsonspecialty.com, they
may have a dealer down under.
I got one and I have been very happy with it, 6 cyl 3.8 model.

If the starter is healthy, it should do just fine. If any question,
now is the time to take it apart and do some maintenance. Clean and
lube, sand the comutator, undercut the bars, etc.

Amd the Alex mantra, cleaned soldered and lubedfor all electric
transfer devices really works.

Unless, you have a very precise method of measreing, the difference
is deminimus. I expect it will tolerate 87 gas for quite a while.
Perhaps, after some carbon build up, it may need a bit more octane.

In all due respect to Pete, I would not go to a thicker gasket. In
my opinion, they offer a greater opportunity to blow.

Sounds like a great engine about to go Vrooooom.

Thanks everyone. I guess I was hoping for ‘‘Yes, the
Toyonisschevford ABC123 has a strong starter and it fits exactly
onto the XK.’’ Maybe next time…
Looks like I’ll go with a freshen up of what I have.
