[xk] Ok guys..here's a question for you

Given we now agree that the late US delivery 120 with the Tung sol
241 D flasher units had these units installed in the US…is the
bolt used to secure it a US generic bolt or was it supplied by the
factory…and just rattled about until it got to Jaguar USA ?–

Sorry Godfrey,

I must have missed something in the theme.
Agree that Tung Sol flasher units were fitted to later USA XK120s and agree these units were made-in-USA, but how do we know they were fitted in USA?

Maybe a shipment was sent to Coventry, and cars being built for USA had unit fitted on-line and thus a British bolt used. Makes sense, as this then allows electrical circuit to be tested before dispatch, rather than rely on any testing/rectification work being done in USA.

And what do you think about Canadian new XK120s?
Were they to same USA spec or to ROW spec but in LHD?

fair question…don’t know…thoughts anyone? As to CDN delivered 120
s they appear to be the same as US spec…but then there were so few
delivered to Canada new it may be impossible to tell for sure
anymore. We do know they were fitted with tribars from new.–

I saw at a local auto flea market that those flashers are being
reproduced and are not expensive. Evidently, they fit some US cars
that now need them for show. There’s always someone out there to
fill a need.

Take a look at Tadek’s XK120 photo album. If you blow-up the
photos of the flasher, it appears to be the original Tung-Sol 241D,
which can be identified by the longish mounting tab with sharp 90
degree corners. Lucas flashers have shorter mounting tabs with
somewhat rounded corners.

If you really stretch your imagination, it appears that the Tung-
Sol flasher is secured by a British bolt. Note the circular center
of the bolt head. Maybe Tadek will weigh-in with a more definitive
interpretation of his photo album.–

I think since the Tung-Sol was patented it was probably the
only flasher on the market, so all US cars of the time
probably had it.
Mark V saloons for the USA were getting the Tung-Sol flasher
from 1949 on. My own Mark V had a Tung-Sol flasher held on
with a BEES 1/4BSF x 1/2’’ long hex head bolt and nut when I
bought it in 1969.
The wiring for the flashers on a Mark V is separate from the
rest of the harness for trafficator cars, and the sidelights
and taillights are different, clearly an afterthought but
all of it Lucas made, such that I am quite sure it all had
to be factory installed.
This is only one car, not much to go on, but on a question
like this we may only get one or two examples, especially as
the flasher is something that often goes bad and if the bolt
got rusty it may break getting it off.–
