Godfrey;
What??
There were two P241-D’s on eBay… I bought the $7.99USD
P241-D Flasher and left the $89.99USD jobbie for the Corvette people to
fight over… Thought I was being downright
considerate ;-}
But… Thanks for the heads up ;-}

Charles,

I don’t think the Tung-Sol P241D flasher is technically correct for
the XK120. That flasher has the universal mounting bracket. Tung-
Sol P241D flashers are plentiful and relatively inexpensive.

The XK120 Spare Parts Catalogue lists the ‘‘Tung Sol 241/D’’ on page
85. These have the ‘‘Lucas style’’ mounting bracket, and they are
rare and relatively expensive. I think Godfrey was pointing to
Ebay Item 140917546154, a Tung-Sol 241D, consistent with the Spare
Parts Catalogue.

Mike B;
Urs’ XK Book (page 178 Vol I) shows (static) a Tung-Sol
P241-D and a 534… the latter with BOTH the Tab and Clip-On
Bracket, the former with no bracket or tab at all…
I spent a couple of hours searching the Internet, trying to learn
the difference between the “241-D” and the “P241-D”… I got no
results! No doubt, and as you note, the units are internally the
same, the method of mounting appears to be the only difference…
(Is that little tab actually worth an additional $80+USD??)
I appreciate you pointing out the physical difference… To be
honest, I never noticed the mount tab (or lack of :frowning: … myopic, I
guess).
Also, in Vol II, page 24-25 (of Urs’ XK Book) are engine bay
pictures of a 120, clearly showing a “Lucas” Flasher fitted…
it appears to be the longer FL.5… this has to be “ex post
facto” since neither the Lucas FL.3 nor the FL.5 were ever fitted
to the XK120 from the factory. They were “legalized” in the UK
in October 1954, so, in theory, first fitted to the XK140’s… (as
per Roger’s research-- See “Turn Signal Flashers” posts on Jan
9-10, 2013).
Which brings us to a question… If Lucas or Tung-Sol Flashers
were never fitted from the factory (due to UK Legislation?) until
Oct. '54, Why were XK120’s fitted with a wire harness that
included turn signals, the DB-10 Flasher Unit, and fitted with the
larger weld-on park lamps that accepted the dual-element bulbs??
What WAS being fitted to “allow” the turn signals to work??
(I understand that USA Export 120’s were fitted with the Tung-Sol
flashers upon arrival in the US. What was used in other “Flasher
Allowed” countries??) Also, why did XK120 Parts Catalogues
note flashers fitted on XK’s as early as Nov. '51 when they
weren’t?
I’m confused (as usual).
The “good news”, for me, is, I have a proper 241D Tung-Sol that
came off my DHC… it has the wrong date code but has the “tab”
on the can… If it fails, or doesn’t work, I’ll just swap the guts with
the NIB P241-D I just bought… No biggie ;-}

Yup… And sometimes the “details” are so obvious, one ignores them :-o…

My collection of flashers:
http://www.jag-lovers.org/snaps/snap_view.php3?id=1363697303
On the two early Tung-Sols with tabs, whatever labeling they
may have originally had is gone, but since they are exactly
like the patent drawing I believe I have identified them
correctly.
Tung-Sol 273D with a separate bracket is specified for Mark VII.
On the Lucas FL5 unit the part number is partly defaced but
I believe it is probably 35010 as expected.

As to whether the Tung-Sol flashers were fitted at the
factory, I haven’t seen any evidence that they weren’t; Mark
V’s and VII’s for the USA were already getting them, so I
think it is reasonable to assume all 120FHC’s also got them,
except perhaps the prototype. They were added to 120 OTS
later and finally all DHCs. Mark VII reached a point after
about 20,973 cars where trafficators were no longer offered
and they all got flashers. Only the Tung-Sol 273D is listed
for Mark VII, no mention of a Lucas unit.–
