[xk] Two chassis number stamps

I’ve had my XK120 FHC for 20 years, but I just discovered something new
on it. The chassis number is stamped in two places. On the master
cylinder mounting bracket for LHD, which is very clear and which I knew
about from the beginning. And just today I found it on top of the front
cross member just in front of the radiator, after I scraped off a thick
coating of non-original paint and did a real thorough
cleaning and wire brushing. Here it is very faint and if I didn’t
already know the number I would not be able to tell it from this
stamping. I wonder why they stamped it twice? This car always seems to
have a new surprise for me.

Just quickly: My FHC also has them both. But later I found even a third one
on the harizontal part of the piece that connect the front fenders in front
of the rad ( close to the " made in England" label. How it got there is a
riddle. When my car was officially teste for the road, they used this one,
which is strange because this is a bolted piece that can be taken of.

Rob,
FYI, Philip Poter’s Original XK, p.138, 3rd paragraph:
“The chassis number on 120s was normally stamped on the LH main member(on
the master cylinder attachment bracket) and, from mid-1952, on the engine
bearer. Sometimes (circa 1951/2) it was around 6 inches further forward on
the top face of the chassis, inboard of the seam. The number was also
usually stamped on the front cross-member. When stamped on the top and
cross-member, the lower half of the numbers can be indistinct due to the
surface being soft and flexing when struck during stamping.”

Hello. I have a 1950 OTS. Is there another chassis number stamping aside from the one on the front cross member? Thank you.

john

John,

Mine is stamped beside the brake master cylinder mounting for LHD vehicles on top of the chassis, mine is RHD. Came out if factory late November 1950.

Thank you Matt.

Mine is for some reason scraped away, or not there. The front cross-member one is there, however. Can someone post a sample picture of the stamping by the brake M/S? I Googled this one. Is it about the way it should look? Thanks.

john

John, on the early XK120s the chassis number wasn’t stamped directly on the frame rail forward of the master cylinder as in the photo you show. Instead. the welded-on bracket for the master cylinder was stamped with the chassis number.

Mike, many thanks for that picture,

john

674432 I will go with this is a restamp?

chassis ID 007a

Thanks Rob. It looks like the number is biased to the left then.

john

Presumably because the apprentice stamping them was not sure how much room he needed and didn’t want to run to the end of the bracket.

Mike, is that your car? I thought yours was later.

Rob, yes my XK120 is from November 1953. However, the photo I posted is from an earlier XK120 with the early location for the chassis number stamping. The later cars like mine were stamped similarly (although typically not as pronounced) to the photo that John posted.

Okay, the game is on. I picked up my chassis from powder coating today. :grinning:
