[xk] XK 140 Radiator

I want to have my XK140 original radiator recored to Concours
condition. I think I have heard that you can add a bit more
cooling capacity by increasing the core size a bit. Does anyone
have experience in doing this? And if someone knows of a quality
shop to do the work, I would appreciate a recommendation.–

If you’re going for the Championship Concourse class you will need
to get the core with the zig-zag tubes, and I don’t think you can
get it with more rows than what the original had. The cores are
available, but very expensive, around $1200. In regard to the
Concourse I’ve been at, the judges don’t seem to pay particular
attention to the radiator core. If you want extra cooling capacity,
I would recommend using an e-type (emergency type) core. It’s what
they use on ambulances and other emergency vehicles that sit idling
for long periods of time in all kinds of weather. It is a five row
core with 14 louvered fins per sq. inch. My 140 has never gotten
over 190F on the hottest of Texas summer days. Contact me off list
if you want the name of the shop that does the conversions. Price
is about $400 plus shipping for everything. Unless you count the
number of louvers per sq. inch, you can’t tell it’s not original.
