[xk] XK 150 Transmission/Overdrive Lube Question!

It’s about time to change the gear lube in my '58 XK 150 FHC.

Question 1
What lube is recommended? Is Redline a suitable lube for an old Jag?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Question 2
How much oil does the transmission/Overdrive hold?

Question3
Do the Tranny and OD drain from seperate plugs?

Question 4
Do they both get filled through the dipstick hole in the interior?

Question 5
I don’t have a manual for a XK 150. Is one available?

Thanks in advance for all the help. The XK Digest is a life saver!

Straight W30 non-detergent is the proper oil to use in the 150 transmission
and OD-----Original Message-----

Someone told me that you can use gear lube 80/90???
Any thoughts???

Hi Mlarsen & all – DON’T EVER use “gear lube 80/90” – you’ll destroy the
gearbox/overdrive very shortly! The factory calls for a straight 30w oil
in both – use this if you don’t want problems. I hope this helps – Larry

No don’t use it. The hypoid additives in this oil will attack bronze
bushings in your transmition. Use only #30 non detergent oil. Castrol is
still making it. It is used in some older tractors check out farm supply
stores.

As I said earlier, use only a non-detergent straight 30 weight oil in the
150 transmission and OD unit. 80/90 wt is used in the later all-synchro
trannies like in the 65-67 e-types, etc.-----Original Message-----

OIl that is used in motorcycles is formulated with high shear strength to
be used in the motorcycles gear box. This is a non-detergent type oil.
Most motorcycle shops carry 30Wt. oil of this type._____________________________________________________________________

No, too heavy for the OD…it would probably not matter on the tranny.

Barry

does it make a difference if you dont have overdrive??

Norm

No, the specification is the same for transmissions without the OD unit.-----Original Message-----

I definately agree with Larry, especially because it is an overdrive
transmission!
Volvos and many other American cars, new and old all used 30W in the O/D
transmissions.
