[xk] XK Data

This issue has gotten so out of hand I am leaving this JL list for a more
civilized E type list. I do not need to listen to this petty carping.

Dear friends
May be someone here still remembers me? I was always around, already when
this list still was on CompuServe and before it did split up in different
sections. I was also there when we had our first group meeting in Donington!
And yes, I still have my faithful XK 120 DHC 1953, which I own since 1996.
Busy life, so not so often on this list.
I remember when XK data was founded I did oppose that the XK Club shared
the chassis numbers with this open database. However most people liked XK
data… not me.
I checked my car today on XK data, and there I saw a wrong entrance about
my car. A registration from UK was entered, even though my car never was
registered in UK and is with me in Switzerland…
That is why I do not like XK data. How can I rectify this error?
Good to be posting here, again!

Hi Zoran,
I remember you from when I was more involved c2000-2003.
xkdata should let you edit this information and claim ownership of
your car. If you look to the right of the “data plate” there should
be a little link that says “edit data”

Zoran,

Great to hear from you again. We were also at the Donington meeting at
NUB120 in 1998 and remember you well. What a great time that was
And we also still have our '52 OTS 120 obtained in 1996.

Hi Zoran, I remember you, and remember seeing your car in
Illinois before you bought it.

One of the disadvantages of xkdata is that it can be edited
by anyone, so there have been cases of people typing in the
wrong chassis number and recording data on the wrong car.

One of the advantages of xkdata is that it can be edited by
anyone, so you can certainly correct what is incorrect.

Somebody has added photos of mine taken from my jag-lovers
photo album.

Stupid comments are harder to remove, but for anything
really offensive you can ask the webmaster to remove it.

I once had the webmaster remove a photo that had been
glommed from an ebay auction; the ebay seller had put it on
his auction by mistake, it was of the wrong car, but the
xkdata entrant had propagated the error.

In the Terms of Use and Policy page there is a disclaimer
that entry of a car on the site is not proof of ownership,
nor proof that the data is true.–

I completely agree with you Zoran. I think it entirely inappropriate that unknown people can post information about someone else’s car on this database without the permission of the owner. If I’d wanted my car included I’d have put it there myself but if someone else enters it there’s little you can do about it. The entry for my XK 807307 which I didn’t put there contains much incorrect information. I know I can edit it but I’m not going to because that just legitimises it. The entry also contains photos that are my intellectual property which have been used without my permission and which would not have been given had I been asked. I would remove the whole entry if I could but I know of no way to do this.

I have learned my lesson and keep quiet about my other cars. I am now very careful not to disclose chassis or registration numbers because this is the only way to stop this information being misused in the public domain.

AND…some crooks use jag photos and data to advertise
totally fake and non existant cars…well they do exist…but
the crook does not have the car…to get deposits for phony
sales etc.
a recent one had photos of a car known to be elsewhere and
even now a differnt color…of course lots of emails from a
‘‘barrister-attorney’’ giving totally fake info…fake bills of
sale, fake title copies…
so while it is nice to see photos of our xks, and know some
data of which ones still exist…beware of anyone saying they
have a certain car online. Not so sure that once a photo is
on a website or online that it is ''intellectual
property…but that is besides the point.

It is good to “see” so much “old” faces here!

Yes, all “Porter” meetings have been great! Donington most memorable,
Goodwood most amazing…Luxemburg most recent!

Yes, Eric, that is what I was saying at the beginning of XK data
already. Now I just did put on the edit button that the information
was false, as I do not know how to delete those false informations…On Thu, Nov 20, 2014 at 12:09 AM, Eric Capron eric@stretton.tv wrote:

Zoran, it looks like another case of someone typing in the
wrong chassis number when they wanted to add info about
677238 and got yours instead.

For all, if the incorrect info is in the area that looks
like a data plate, you can go to the right and click ‘‘Edit
data’’ and it will go to where you can correct or remove the
data. You can remove anything except chassis number since
the whole site is based on chassis numbers. Click on the
incorrect line and hit delete or backspace. Add correct info
or leave it blank if you wish. Scroll to the bottom and
click ‘‘Post information’’.

If the incorrect stuff is in ‘‘Comments’’, Eric, I see you
have created a very nice web site of your own describing
your car. But if you wish to remove the link to your site on
xkdata, or Zoran if you wish to remove the incorrect GB
registration, you can scroll down to the bottom of the page
and click ‘‘Contact’’. Tell the webmaster what you want
removed and why and he will remove it when he gets time. He
seemed like a nice enough guy when I contacted him about an
incorrect photo and the color choices in the pull down menu
for pre-52 cars, and wants his web site to be a repository
of useful and correct information. Just as jag-lovers has
always been about accurate information.

BTW he does not want to get involved in disputes about
celebrity ownership or race provenance or market value, etc.–

Rob,

Thanks for the suggestion. I may remove the link but I’m reluctant to start
editing the entry as it would be almost tacit approval. I’d be much less
anti if whoever made the entry and nicked the picture from my site had asked
me first. But then, Google does this all the time and no one seems to care.
Perhaps I should stop whinging and get a life.

zoran

indeed I do remember you! you were on the list and were preparing your car for your wedding! sometime appropriately afterward you had announced the birth of your daughter!
to me, it does not seem that long ago, however time does go quickly.

my own DHC has been on the road almost 7 seasons. anyway it’s good to hear from you again . Hope Alls well with you and yours!

Well Rick, it is good you are still around!
My wife is still around after 14 years of happy marriage, too, even
though my love for cars put some strain, and needs a lot of
understanding! There are now 3 daughters, the oldest 12 years old and
all of them enjoyed a lot of time in the XK! As the time flies by…
Next year we will take our XK either to Mille Miglia for the first
time or to GP Nuvolari for the 4th time!
