[xk] xk120 OTS floorboards

I am installing new floorboards and don’t have the originals.
Were the tee nuts to hold the gearbox cover installed from the
bottom or the top? My guess is the bottom for better holding
power.
Also I am planning to coat with lindseed oil for water
protection and then paint them with a flat black enamel paint.
Anyone have any suggestions on this?

thanks tom–

tee nuts on the bottom …originally they were baltic birch plywood
unfinished. I’ve had mine in my car now since the middle 1980s
unfinished…without problem…why change it ? Are you planning on
taking the car swimming ? Jaguar has the blueprints for these if
you need them …–

That said, it is Not a Bad Idea to “seal” the birch plywood to
prevent future (over time) delamination of the plywood… You
may not drive in the rain, but you cannot stop Mother Nature’s
vasilating humidity levels!!
Oh, and do NOT cheap out and buy “big home improvement box”
store plywood… it is ONLY three ply, and poorly made… You
WANT the Five Ply, 9mm Baltic or Russian Birch Plywood…
Easily found on eBay for NOT a lot of money!!

Charles… I can no longer easily see the edge of my
floorboards…but I think you will find that it is thicker tham 9
mm…please check it before you spend the $$ and don’t forget the
boot boards are the same material…but thinner.–

Charles is right on with his comments on the grade of plywood.
Even in a very small town such as the one I live in, most local cabinet
makers know where to get the good stuff and you can often get offcuts at
very reasonable prices.
I would also seal ALL surfaces with marine spar varnish before painting
the underside black.

And carefully choose the size of the piece you buy. I bought some Baltic
Birch on Amazon for the lid to my spare tire compartment. I had only about
an inch of waste.

Godfrey;
You are correct, MEASURE before you buy (AND before you
cut!! My wood is safely ensconced out in my parts building, laid
flat with flat items on top, to help prevent warpage)…
I bought the Russian Birch for my DHC’s “heelboard” inserts, the
boot floorboards and the “Package Tray” for my son’s P-1800E all
from a Woodworking supplier on Bay, paying less than the retail
Jaguar & Volvo vendor prices.
Given I still had the original pieces for both these vehicles, albeit
in poor condition, I was able to make suitable patterns rather easily.

different! be careful! I remember one thing VERY well when re-
doing mine… I discovered in my naivetae that someone had swopped

interchangable! you can stuff em in but when doing it right. the

Godfrey;
I am fortunate in the fact that the “PO” of my DHC was the Jag’s
original/first owner… I, of course, am the second. With this bit of
history, I can tell that the majority of my 120 is (was) as stock as
the day it left the factory…
What I hate is when some (not so well intentioned) restorer puts
full wood floorboards in the DHC which originally had full metal
floorpans with wood heel inserts!!

It is Boiled linseed oil.
I did a linseed oil test on a scrap piece of plywood and the
enamel paint seems to adhere pretty well once the oil has
dried for a few days.–

Godfrey,
Can you be a little more specific when you replied;
‘‘I got mine direct from Jaguar’’

I’m referring to the floorboard blueprints for the XK120 OTS.

Do you mean the heritage site or the local dealer near you in BC?

neither …they came from the factory…in about 1978. I just wrote
to them, whining that it was getting kinda drafty driving with
holes in the floor and wearing a kilt didn’t help…so I guess they
felt sorry for me  I am increasingly finding that Jaguar heritage
is totally uninterested in anything except selling ‘heritage
certificates’ which from my point of view don’t tell me anything I
don’t already know…so just what is the point? Try the
archives…but don’t hold your breath! The archivist has ‘retired’
and is, so I understand, about to become part of the revolving
display in his own case. My local dealer is a nice chap…but
regards anything before 2007 as ‘heritage’ :frowning: I’m beginning to
feel like a fossil!–

What thickness are the wooden floorboards on a steel OTS, I have some remanufactured ones but they are only 9 mm thick and seems quite insufficient…
Per

They were originally 3/8" thick, about 9.5mm.
