[xk] XK150S Auction sale

Hello all,
Yesterday I received the November copy of Sports Car Market magazine. On
page 72 there’s a section convering the sale at Bonhams & Butterfields in
August of a 1959 Jaguar XK150 S 3.4L roadster S/N T831505DN, noted as
condition 3 and which sold for $155,000. Here is an except from the
comments, “The smaller engined 150, with the triple-carb S head and
overdrive. Some say it’s the preferred model, as the 3.8s are slightly
heavier.” Say what? Is that right? I don’t get it, the 3.8L engine is
heavier than the 3.4L??? Nah. What am I missing here?

Don’t know Jerry! Sounds odd. Never seen different specs for
weight depending on engine. Maybe it’s not heavier, just weighs
more. (!)

Surely a 3.8 has to be lighter - larger bore diameter means bigger
holes, and the 3.8 cast on side of block must weigh a few grams less
than 3 1/2 cast on 3.4 block.

Clearly good advertising copy and you can’t criticise if it got knocked
down for $155K, as same car was sold at RM Auctions by 2nd owner with
40000mls in August 2005 for $110K, a one owner XK as of 1998.

A 3 minus…!! My friend Donald Osborne did the write-up on this one. I’ll
have a talk with him about “slightly heavier” I was under the impression
that all “S” models were 3.8. When you sell a car at auction, you don’t
want a buyer…you want 2 buyers…!! john shuck

Manny,
Yes, someone wanted it bad enough. As the S model XK150s go to the heavens,
I hope they pull up my non S cars.

John,
Yes, most S model XK150s were 3.4L, with the later XK150 S or non S cars
(after mid 59) being either. Also offered was both a 3.4L and 3.8L two carb
version. I own one, a late 3.8L two carb FHC. So, for the earlier XK150, 2
engine choices, while the later cars had 4 engines available.
