[xk8] 1997 rad cap/coolant type

Silly question really, but how does one remove the chrome radiator
cap on top of the engine, it seems to go round and round but does
not come off! Any comments on a preferred coolant for a flush,
original appears red, perhaps switch to Zerex G05? Any comments
welcome.–

The Chrome finisher is just for looks. Pry it off and get to
the allen socket for removal. Sometimes I use channel lock
pliers to assist if it is overtight.

There is a block drain on the left side of the engine to
drain almost completely.

The radiator drain is on the lower right

I used to work at the Jag dealer so I only use Yellow or
Orange OEM coolant, I don’t know about other types.

Yes, it’s simply clipsed on top. Be careful not to
deteriorate it, it’s made of very thin metal.

If you have a chrome cap, you must have an early engine.

These did use (from factory, NO long life coolant, to the
contrary of later engines.

Be very careful not to mix Jaguar’s nowadays standard
coolant (long life) and the ‘‘normal life’’ coolant you may
still have in your car: this may create jelly that will
stuck your cooling line…

As always thanks everyone for the replies, cap came off easy once I
was told how. Still a bit puzzled on the coolant, seems to have a
red tint to it in the engine now, are you saying not to mix G05
with the factory one, or drain, flush and the G05, thanks again
guys. Although a 97 car, engine was replaced with newer one at
50,000 kms due to the Nikasil problem, has metal chain tensioners.–

If you do not know what type of coolant is inside, then
flush it and fill it again with fully new.

But, putting the same type (and even brand) is always
better for the seals lifetime… Ask the previous owner/
dealer who maintained it. Normally on Longlife filled
engines there is a sticker on the filling tank.

If the engine was replaced by the dealer and had metal
tensioners, it was probably filled with orange coloured
coolant (Jaguars from 2000MY onwards have this OAT coolant)
